    Slamming with SWG

I would not add stabilizer now before SLAM. I'd add it after passing all three criteria when you go back to relying on the SWG to chlorinate.

pool close or open in SC?

I'm also in the Cola SC area. We do not close our pool. Our timer has a temperature control that kicks the pump on when the temperature drops into the mid 30's. It really doesn't happen too often. I've never insulated the exposed pipes. As long as it is circulating, I've never worried.

Kit came in - CYA is 100+ - Time to drain?

Welcome to TFP :) Yes. Sounds like you need to drain but exactly how much depends on that CYA number. Did you test using a diluted sample like these instructions? Pool School - CYA You won't want to drain all of the water in a vinyl (or most other) lined pool ever. Usually you are safe if you...

Cloudy Pool (algae bloom, 0 cya)

It depends on how you added the CYA. If you didn't dissolve granules in a sock but put it in a skimmer, the granules could be in your filter and not yet dissolved. In that case it may not show up on test for potentially a few days.

My pool liner feels like sandpaper

Welcome to TFP :) You shouldn't need to worry about CH (calcium hardness) with a vinyl lined pool. How old is your liner?

    Greeeeeeen Water

HI there :) I'm assuming you have it filled back up. You need to follow the SLAM process Pool School - SLAM - Shock Level And Maintain It isn't a one time addition of bleach. You're likely going to need gallons and gallons of bleach, not one or two. Read that link and follow to a tee. I see...

    Gunk around steps?

I even asked hubby to look and we don't see it. looks like where fiberglass steps meet the vinyl of your IG pool. I have a very similar set up and have problems with algae in the cracks of the fiberglass frame of the steps and in the corners. I have purchased plastic bristled hand...

    cant get water to clear

How are you testing the water? You don't have enough chlorine to sanitize, let alone clear algae. Take a look at the instructions for SLAM. Pool School - SLAM - Shock Level And Maintain That should help you clear it.

    No more closing

HI there, I'm a bit further south than you where freezing temperatures aren't a huge concern. We don't close our pool and we don't have a heater but our pump timer has a thermostat. It will kick the pump on when the temps fall to about 35 degrees because circulating water will help prevent...

General order of operations, CYA <20, my initial measurements and why no algaecide?

Re: General order of operations, CYA <20, my initial measurements and why no algaecid HI there :) I hope I can answer your questions. You're familiar with pool math so first adjust PH up to about 7.2 (washing soda or borax). You'll want to raise your CYA to a target of about 30 before...

Please help, struggling first timer here.

If that was the Walmart test strips, I'd wait until you get your TF-100. Both strips and pool stores can get CYA wrong. CYA is not consumed in your water like chlorine.....once it's there it stays there and don't want it to get too high or you'll be facing the need to drain. That is why I'd...

Should I cancel my pool company opening??

I think you can do this. Do you have a good test kit for balencing your water? I also never "close" we run pump a few hours a day in winter and have a thermostat triggered timer in case the temps dip near freezing.

    High Filter Pressure

Welcome to TFP Is the gauge at 0 when the pump is off? If not, you clearly have a faulty gauge. I suspect that is the case. It should just screw off and screw a new one on using some plumbers pipe thread tape.

    SLAMing chemical results first day

:) No problem. You are on the right track with a good test kit. Don't hesitate to ask questions and one day all those chemical detail will click like a light bulb coming on. Since you're slamming a green pool, please be sure to brush frequently, no less than once daily. If you try to take...

    SLAMing chemical results first day

CYA is not a chemical that gets consumed in your pool. The ONLY way it could go down like that is if you drained a lot of water and replaced it. I suspect testing error on the CYA. The test is one that takes getting used to and the lighting is important. You should be in full sun to test with...

    SLAMing chemical results first day

Hi there Based on the information provided above, you don't need to add anything just yet. If you are slamming to get a green pool cleared up just focus on chlorine until it's clear and not the other numbers. PH test gets wonky results with FC above 10 so you can't trust that now anyway.

Some last minute questions and clarification

Hi and welcome to TFP :) I'm not much help on general closing questions as I live in a climate where we don't close our pool but the answer to your last question is yes. The pipe(s) on the right in the picture (which I would call the front of the pump) would be from the skimmer and main...

HAVE to have new liner; do it now, or in the Spring? Pool level is falling quickly.

How do I get my water clear

It is the PH test that becomes invalid with elevated chlorine not CYA but.......CYA is not something that gets consumed by algae or sunlight as chlorine is. So....if you haven't added any stabilizer or stabilized chlorine product (like granulated "shock") then your CYA would be no different than...

Please Help With Stabilizer After Algea Bloom

HI there.....yep you need some stabilizer in there. Regular granular stabilizer sold (at least here) at Walmart is fine...may say conditioner but your looking for active ingredient cyanuric acid. SLAM process two weeks and cloudy?

As previously noted, the sand filter does take the longest to clear cloudy water. I'm pretty sure I was at it for about two weeks as well. If you do add DE, brush brush brush. When I did this my pressure started rising a lot more rapidly, telling me it was working.
