Does a pool cover change target values?

Well now I'm curious. My CYA=40, and I target FC=7 (high end of min 3, target 5). I have a solar cover (temp ~89F now) and loose about 2-3 ppm/day with light load. Based on others experience, this now seems high. It has been like this all summer. Water is clear, and my pH tends to run low.

What does this PH reading look like to you?

Off topic, but nice deer in the background.

    Pool Opening Levels

I've only been using bleach for chlorination for several years now.

    Pool Opening Levels

Well, the strange thing is that I tend to have a PH that lowers over time (at least from last season). I have to keep adding Borax to keep it inline. From what others have told me, that makes no sense. I don't know what to do with the disconnect from expectation and my measurements.

    Pool Opening Levels

I finally opened my pool last weekend. It was late due to several cold snaps, then an extended vacation. I was pleasantly surprised that the water wasn't even cloudy even though the water temperature was about 70F. I still had FC=1.5 after adding ~30-40% new water. Anyway, my initial levels...

How concerned should I be with TA and CH

I am also stumped now that I realize that what I am seeing is opposite what is expected. Expectations never stuck in my mind last year as I was studying this stuff, I just treated the results. Should I continue to treat the results (low pH), or suspect my test kit?

How concerned should I be with TA and CH

I am using 12.5% bleach for chlorination this entire season. Last year (new pool) when I was using pucks (trichlor I think), pH was constantly rising and I adjusted with acid. I have not tested the fill water TA or pH. I will try to remember to do that tonight. Beyond springtime with about...

How concerned should I be with TA and CH

Results from Saturday are: TA=140 pH=7.2 (or a touch lower) For the entire season, TA has been between 170 and 140, and pH has dropped slowly from 7.8 to now 7.2. I will be closing the pool in a few weeks (Chicago nights are driving the daily average near 60). Should I adjust pH before then...

How concerned should I be with TA and CH

I don't have my latest TA numbers from a month ago with me, but I will retest tonight or tomorrow. Before retesting, I will have my wife babysit me on following the directions to help remove operator error on my part. But you are right. I have had high TA all season (June - now), and my pH has...

How concerned should I be with TA and CH

Coming back to this. My pH has continued to decrease slowly over time (7.2 now) without any intervention on my part. I have only added bleach this season. I have been aerating only when we are in the pool (cover off) by redirecting the outlet eyelet. I am concerned with adding baking soda to...

How concerned should I be with TA and CH

Your comments have me concerned about the accuracy of my pH measurements. Last season, I had to add acid every few days to keep it low enough. I do not remember if this was right after using pucks, or after I switched to BBB. This season, I started at 7.8, and have been around 7.5 for 2...

How concerned should I be with TA and CH

Recent numbers: FC = 6.0 CC = 0.0 PH = 7.5 CYA ~ 42 (much closer to 40 than to 50) TA = 170 CH = 40 The CYA number is from opening the pool, and is probably diluted some with some very heavy downpours we had several weeks ago. However, that would really just drive me to maintain lower FC since...

I too noticed that my TA was high at 130

Retested everything with TF100 kit: FC = 8.0 CC = 0.5 PH = 7.8 CYA ~ 42 (much closer to 40 than to 50) TA = 170 CH = 60 When I previously tested TA, I didn't wipe the tip of the additive between drops as instructed. I am guessing that is why the results are so different. I guess it makes sense...

I too noticed that my TA was high at 130

Thanks for your input. I now plan to test CYA tonight. I was under the impression that it didn't deteriorate over the winter (don't remember where I got that idea from). Are you saying ignore TA totally, or just here at startup? From last year's experience, I did see PH continually rise, so I...

I too noticed that my TA was high at 130

I finally just opened my pool for the season. I haven't done all not remeasurements yet, but estimated CYA based on what I had last year and the water added (from 50 to 37 with 25% water added). I raised the FC to shock level (15), and will monitor overnight. However, I too noticed that my TA...

Droid App - Wrote my Own

Ken, Can you provide me (or point me to) the APK file for SimplePool Lite? I will do my own experimentation porting this into the PlayBook. Looking forward to playing with it, but I don't know enough about the Android platform to find the APK file.

Droid App - Wrote my Own

I have a BlackBerry phone and PlayBook. Your existing Android code should easily convert to be used on the PlayBook by following the directions here. I would love to see it available on the PB, and it would further port directly to RIM's upcoming BB10 for phones. I don't know what it takes to...
