    TA vs pH

Keep your PH in range for reasons beyond eye comfort. Don't chase a target TA number if your PH stays in line. TA is a measure of the ability to buffer PH changes in a nutshell.

Ugh Found a dead rat in my strainer...

We had a rat get stuck on the weir door and die. It was QUITE stuck on it once discovered and I had to beg my husband to help. When he tried to get it off it took prying. He was like "honey I don't think you understand, this thing was disintegrating upon my attempt to pry it odd" Gross just...

    Salt accumulation or loss?

A SWG does not produce salt. It uses the salt in the water to produce hypochlorous acid to chlorinate the pool. And the notion that the salt would go down over time is due to splash out and rain causing backwash.

I think I agree with Matt here ;)

    Where is the chlorine going??

Hi paigemar and welcome to TFP :) Congrats on a good test kit. One thing I'm going to mention regarding your SLAM process, is that you need to switch to liquid chlorine. All dry chlorine is stabilized either by CYA or by calcium. This "could" be partly the cause of your high calcium hardness...

    High pH

HI there How are you chlorinating? A SWG will drive PH up. Aerating will increase PH. And you may be able to control the PH rise by lowering your TA. What is your TA currently?
  7. AimeeH

How much muriatic acid will I need each week with a SWCG? Let's do real maths here.

I rarely......less than once a year need to add muratic acid to my salt water pool.

    White milky stringy substance

You posted test results today in post #1 That wasn't at SLAM level. We've all answered your questions based on the fact that your pool is currently clear? That FC was not at shock level for your CYA.

    White milky stringy substance

So your water is clear now? You are testing with a good kit. The water is safe at the target for your cya. Is the water crystal clear?

    White milky stringy substance

HI and welcome to TFP  How are you testing your water? I wouldn't worry if your FC is normal for your CYA per: Pool School - Chlorine / CYA Chart

    Dead Animal Prevention

We've had numerous species of dead animals in our pool. I'll follow this thread to see if there are any good ideas for prevention.

Aeration / CYA level in SWG pools

I'll take a stab at both and get corrected if I'm wrong :) Yes. And SWH will continue to raise PH ....BUT......that can depend on your TA level which acts as a buffer for PH swings. I run a SWG and I'm one of those (seemingly rare) folks that doesn't fight PH rise from the SWG as I keep my TA...

    Higher TA and Borates

That might depend on what you are adding. Boric acid or 20 mule team borax? Use pool math at the bottom of the page is a feature that gives you the effects of adding specific chemicals. - - - Updated - - - And Matt's answer is much more complete than mine :)

    CC still high

Really I'm thinking if your chlorine was 6.5 yesterday and 6.0 today without adding chlorine beyond the SWG then a CC of 6 is an impossibility. Let's just run through this. 10 ml sample, add powder. Water turns pick you add r0871 one drop at a time at about one second intervals until water is...

    CC still high

Hi Cindy I'm confused by this. You say yesterday FC was 6.5 and today it is 6 and you did not add chlorine but you're losing 10 ppm between tests in the morning and evening?
  16. AimeeH

    CC still high

Just out of curiosity how often are you testing and how much FC are you losing between those tests?
  17. AimeeH

    CC still high

CC of 6 doesn't seem possible. Can you describe how you're doing the test to get that number?

Who got the answer to THIS ... problem?

Welcome to TFP :) Doesn't sound so whacked, sound like testing error to me ;) Any advice we can give is based on accurate test results. Take a look at the links below. We don't trust dip tabs for testing but if they work for you by all means keep at it. If you want to learn about the how's and...

    Next step after SLAM ????

Raining bears or drinking beers? :laughblue:

    Next step after SLAM ????

you can if it makes you feel better :) But generally the advice is to back was when your filter pressure is 25% above your "clean" operating pressure.
  21. AimeeH

    Next step after SLAM ????

I would put your CYA in and wait. Your SWG may start causing PH to rise in which case you may want to adjust TA down a bit.
  22. AimeeH

    Ash and PH

Just FYI here.....aerating won't bring your TA down, it will raise your PH with little to no effect on TA. Muratic acid lowers both TA and PH.
  23. AimeeH

    Use SWG during SLAM?

You hit the nail on the head. We say not to so new folks can grasp and understand through testing what their chlorine consumption is. It's extra wear on the SWG too if you're slamming just because the difference the SWG makes in chlorine is kind of minute compared to what is usually required...

    Bat took a dive

This just made me totally LOL I've also gotten rodents in my skimmer.......actually one got stuck on the weir and took minor surgery to disengage from the weir door. I bumped my FC all the way up to shock level in my case but that was for peace of mind.
  25. AimeeH

is it normal for PH to raise on its own?

Your TA is a buffer for your PH. High TA can cause ph to rise re quickly. That's the reason for the TA question.

    Milky Water

The SLAM article above should help you out. It's a process, not a one time addition of "shock." Shock level for 50 cya would be 20FC. And with CYA at 50 your FC shouldn't drop below 4 or you have an invitation for an algae party.
  27. AimeeH

    Milky Water

HI there It sounds like you've got something in there eating your chlorine and just waiting to turn your water green. With CYA of 50 and FC of 3, your chlorine is too low. To clear up algae, we follow a process we call SLAM Shock Level And Maintain The amount of chlorine you need is...

    bonding, ground, electrical knowledge needed

When we had the power company involved the end answer from them was basically "we agree" there is stray voltage but they couldn't tell me why. They had an engineer out here and all......6 trucks finally showed up. I think they finally wanted to blame it on the buried phone line. But phone...
