    Adding chlorine with SWG

Shouldn't matter if the SWCG is on. Just like adding any chemical, you'll want to do so with the pump running and in front of a return to disburse into the water and follow up with a quick brush around.

How much salt for 3500 ppm in a cup of water?

So......by comparison, a salt water pool is about 3500ppm sal while the ocean is more like 35,000ppm

Slightly confused about the need for higher cya for SWG.

Acmfl Agreed with Marty above. I'm on year 7 with a SWG and have found life easier at higher CYA levels. Your SWG adds chlorine ever so slowly so the added CYA does a lot to protect that chlorine during the high sunny hours of afternoon. With lower CYA, the sun may be burning off your chlorine...

Could high TA cause IC40 Cell issue

Hi and welcome to TFP. Aeration alone won't lower your TA. I can't imagine a scenario where TA would affect a reading on a salt cell. I personally have experienced my salt cell reading high salt when it was high chlorine, not salt. To lower your TA, you'll need to use muratic acid to lower...

    Thinking about salt water

I'm a very happy SWG owner. Just make sure your expectations are in the right place. Overall expense may not end up being less than purchasing chlorine since a SWG will only produce chlorine for a finite number of hours. I'm on my 6th year with ours and it's still producing with no issues but I...

    Problems switching over to saltwater

;) Double check the salt ppm "range" in your SWG manual. You may be ok but I don't have the test bottle to remind me what 7.4 is.

    Problems switching over to saltwater

And you are letting that strip sit in a water sample for 3-4 minutes? I use a tiny 4oz mason jar with my pool water sample to test salt using strips like that. They need to have the tip submerged but keeping the top dry, only in about an inch of water. Edit- I'm describing how I use the...

    Problems switching over to saltwater

Hi there :) Are you using the Aquacheck salt test strips that have you read the color shift peek? That is the only "strip" for reading anything pool related (except borate strip) that I'd trust. You might want to consider getting a Taylor drop based test for more accuracy. Is all the salt...

    borates vs. salt water

Welcome to TFP :) In a nutshell I'd think it would be the same if properly managed, since a saltwater pool with SWG is a chlorine pool too. The only difference is the source of the chlorine is the SWG instead of liquid. Same chemical though in pool water.

how much colder is a salt water pool than reg chlorine?

Salt doesn't make water colder. The addition of salt to water does decrease its freezing temperature so it will remain water (not ice) below 32 degrees.

how much colder is a salt water pool than reg chlorine?

I couldn't agree more. Your cooler water is likely due to those cooler air temps that you mentioned.

    New SWG, cloudy from jets

Well, the OTO test is not accurate enough to do a true OCLT. Stay the course on SLAM. Sand filters take the longest to clear the cloudiness (I can confirm from my own experience). You can speed things up a bit by adding DE to the sand filter. Pool School - Add DE to a Sand Filter But I really...

    New SWG, cloudy from jets

Hi there :) I'm gonna speculate that you never completed your SLAM process. You need to keep chlorine at shock level for your CYA until: Water is clear CC is .5 or less OCLT less than 1 Pool School - SLAM - Shock Level And Maintain I'm curious how you measured the FC for your OCLT? With the...

    No chlorine!!! New chlorinator installed

Hi Dirtboy Whether your SWG is currently producing chlorine or not, you still need to follow the Shock Level And Maintain Pool School - SLAM - Shock Level And Maintain SLAM process to clear a green pool. A SWG will never be able to clear and algae bloom.

    Salt water system issues

Welcome to TFP :) Did you check your salt level? Sounds like it isn't producing chlorine due to low salt and now the water is cloudy due to inadequate free chlorine. To clear it you will want to follow this process. Pool School - SLAM - Shock Level And Maintain

    SWG Cleaning question

The bubbling and foaming would depend on buildup which is somewhat dependent on your water source. My well water has nearly zero CH so we've never had buildup on our SWG. When I acid washed mine........no foaming/bubbling.

    SWG Cleaning question

I would think the controller would know if it's producing chlorine. But also keep in mind it may have just been the end of the SWG life. They only do produce chlorine for X amount of time.

Pentair IC40 working but salt levels are low

+1^^^ When the salt gets too low, the cell will stop producing chlorine. How low is too low is probably in your owners manual.

    SWG questions?

This sounds like testing error. Tap water should have no CYA.

please help my pool is not holding chlorine...

Welcome :) What we can help you with is taking control of your pool by reliably testing your water with a good test kit. We actually trust that testing far and above the "professional" pool store testing as over the years we've seen them be so wrong and not demonstrate a true understanding of...

What's a good salt to buy and where is the best place to buy it?

I think I'm the only one on the forum who regularly uses 25# bags of non iodized granulated salt. It dissolves FAST !! I work for a foodservice distribution company and with my employee discount it's the best value hands down. But without the inside advantage I doubt restaurant depot or SAMs...

Why are Pool Builders Steering Me Away from SWCG's?

^^^^^Me too. 7/2017 will actually be the 6 year birthday for my SWG and still pumping out chlorine for my pool. I do "plan" for the expense of replacement when it fails because I understand that kind of like a light bulb, it has a finite life. Our builder was a SWG owner himself so it...

    Quick question

What FC number you are targeting depends on your CYA. As for %run time for the SWG, that may just take some tinkering. I'd start at 20% and see how much your chlorine drops. I know I've let mine drop too low by not checking when coming down from SLAM and running at 20%, so just be sure to check...

PB says with SWG you are just trading muriatic acid for chlorine

I have a SWG, I aerate with a sprinkler to cool the pool a pretty significant part of the summer and I almost never need to add acid........not once this season. My fill water is extremely low TA. I usually have to add baking soda to raise TA once at opening and that is it. So low TA keeps PH...

Switching to Salt Water – Need lots of help and advise, hardware selection

Welcome to TFP:wave: I can't answer ALL of you questions like the ones on and acid pump so I'll take a stab at the SWG q's An SWG won't produce enough chlorine to get you throug a slam You won't notice the difference in salinity and it's better to keep your salt at or near the reccomended...

    Floating Chlorinater Question? CYA Problem.

When you say chlorinator.......are you referring to a liquid chlorine pump? If it was the kind that also gets fed tablets, then it is the tablets causing your CYA rise. It doesn't matter whether they are in a floater or not.

what are you using to test your salt level?

I got my aquachek test strips from the same source :) That is the one and only "test strip" found to be actually relatively correct. Which is why I think tftestkits sells them.

what are you using to test your salt level?

I also use the aquachek strips. I add more salt a year maybe than others do for various reasons. One reason in the last two years was due to pretty high water exchange due to flooding rains. Another reason this year is my pool is simply hot and I'm not ashamed to admit that this weekend I plan...
