Calcium Hardness Vinyl Pool with Heater

I added 20 pounds of Calcium Chloride by spreading it in the deep end of the pool in front of the return. Salt cell still working and didn't have any trouble with it dissolving. I did have to brush it around a bit. Guess I was just lucky.

    Most efficient use of heater

I heated my pool to 84 degrees so the grandkids could swim yesterday. I even went in with them. The high hit 75. 😀 The next 10 days call for highs in the low 50’s and lows in the 40’s and 30’s, with one night’s low of 28! Ouch! No one will be swimming. Am I better off keeping the heater at 84...

A Request from TFP, and a few updates

I just want to say thank you to all of the volunteers who make this forum great! I am an end user of technology. That is someone who has very little knowledge of what it takes behind the scenes to to make any software, app, or message board work. So this thread was very educational for me. I...

    Exhaust smell from Heater

You may want to try to clean the orrifices. The smell I had coming from the exhaust is definitely gone.

    Exhaust smell from Heater

Had a chance to take out the orrifice assembly today. One of the orrifices had a spider web in it. I cleaned out the orrifices, reassembled, fired the heater back up. No gas smell. Burning clean. The whole job took about an hour. The hardest part was loosening the gas line union. Never thought...

Thanks for taking the time to post such a detailed explanation. This site is invaluable. I will raise my CH.

Calcium Hardness Vinyl Pool with Heater

Any other Mods care to join in? Even though a vinyl pool doesn’t require calcium I figure that raising the level to 250 won’t hurt the pool water or affect the pool. I have read that soft water can be corrosive to pipes etc. Now I am the farthest thing from a chemist so I really don’t know how...

Calcium Hardness Vinyl Pool with Heater

Pool math says to add 32 pounds of calcium chloride. I will start with 22 pounds, test, and add more as needed. Do I just purchase this at a pool store and dump it in the pool all at one time? Is there a technique to adding the suggested amount? Will it cloud the pool for a while? Thanks for any...

    Exhaust smell from Heater

Thanks for all of the replies. It seems we are on the right path and need to clean the orifices and the burners. I will try that and see if it works.

Calcium Hardness Vinyl Pool with Heater

I posted this in the everything else thread, but didn't get a response. Figured all of the chemical experts hang out here. My CH has been consistent in the 100-125 range for 2 years now. (Sometimes I get 4 drops until the color change, sometimes 5). I am having heater issues and I dug up my...

    Exhaust smell from Heater

I had my neighbor look at my heater, and he thinks it is a gas smell coming from the exhaust when the heater is operating. He owns a commercial HVAC company. Admittedly, he does not have experience with pool heaters, but he understands furnaces, gas lines, pressures, etc. Stuff that is way out...

    Exhaust smell from Heater

Dug out my manual for the heater today. Haven't had a chance to take the heater apart, the weather is too bad. However, I noticed that Hayward recommends a calcium level of at least 200ppm. Since I have a vinyl liner pool I have not been concerned with the calcium level and mine has remained...

    Exhaust smell from Heater

When my Hayward heater is burning, I notice an exhaust smell. Kind of hard to describe, but it has a strong smell of burning gas. Kind of like when your gas oven first ignites you can smell the burning gas, then it goes away. However, this exhaust smell does not go away. It does not smell...

    Concrete is Stained, need help

Sorry Kstruglia, but I think you are going to have to live with it. I have had the same issue, and the first time I noticed it, about 3 years ago, it drove me crazy. Called the pool builder and he had a concrete specialist out. He first tried to power wash it, that did nothing. I then tried...

    Pool Green

Please don’t just try cleaning it for a few days. This site is a collection of thousands of pool owners most of whom stumbled upon this site for the same reasons you did. Pool store advice that got their water green and the same advice that kept it green. That is where I was a year and a half...

    Vinyl liner fading

My liner is 2.5 years old and here is the fading. Hard to see with water in the pool but pretty obvious with the water drained down to winter level. I asked the company that closed my pool this year if that looks normal and they said it does. They said all liners fade and they have seen worse.

    What's your current pool temp?

My temperature is 80 degrees (ugh). Turned the heater off two weeks ago hoping to cool the water into the 60’s for closing tomorrow. But unseasonably warm days and nights have kept the temps up. Good news is the grandkids have been swimming this week. Was thinking of delaying closing but...

Thanks. How long after I add MA can I test and have it be accurate? I want to add a few smaller doses until I hit my target.

    Does Polyquat 60 raise PH?

In preparation for closing, I took my FC to slam level, passed the OCLT on Tuesday night into Wednesday, and let my FC drift down. Before the SLAM, my PH was 7.5. I forgot to lower it to 7.2 before the SLAM. This morning, when my FC measured 9.5, I measured the PH and it was 8.2 and maybe...

Vermiculite bottom- does this look right?

Here is a picture of mine before the liner went in. As most have said you can see every imperfection at night. But it looks smooth and great in the sunlight! He did vacuum before he put down the liner and I am happy with it.

New liner installation wrong??? I need help

My liner is not flush against the walls in the corners either. My pool is 2.5 years old and didn’t think anything of it when they installed the liner. It has not stretched back into place but I thought this was normal. I have had no problems with the liner popping out of the coping. Don’t know...

    Vinyl Liners and FC ranges

Anything to this? After reading through the material again, they talk about "bleaching" not "fading." Duraleigh, I believe you are correct, a normal amount of fading is going to occurr regardless. I thought about doing the experiment you mentioned, but I do not have any of my liner left over...
