Recovering from runoff in pool - need help interpreting this

So, I ran the dilution test as instructed and get about 120 (60 x 2) CYA. I guess it really is high. I forgot to mention earlier that I used to add 2lbs of Clorox shock once a week as well. I think that may have dichlor in it...which Richard alluded to in his response. So I guess my CYA may...

Recovering from runoff in pool - need help interpreting this

Thanks Richard. I feel better about the pH and TA tests now. I have an IC40 Intellichlor SWG. The only things I've added to my pool over the years have been bags of salt and muriatic acid. I've adjusted the output on my SWG from 20% - 60% from time to time depending on my FC levels. I've...

Recovering from runoff in pool - need help interpreting this

We had over 8" of rain in a few hours the weekend of 6/8. It turned my lovely crystal clear pool into this: My treatment plan was to run the pool pump 24x7, and dump about 10 gallons of bleach into the pool to kill everything. My FC levels are slowly coming down and the water is clearing up...

Is a SWG right for me?

A caveat, I've only ever owned one house with a pool...so I don't have any personal experience to the contrary....but the house we're currently in came with a SWG gunite pool. The extent of my chemical fiddling over the past 6 years has been: 1. adding a few bags of salt each year 2. adding...

Clean-up after 8" of rain in 5 hours - UPDATE

Well, after running the pump and polaris 24/7 for 1 week and keeping elevated chlorine levels for much of that time, I can now see bottom again! I'm pretty sure everything is dead from the SLAM, now just gotta keep running the pump to get that fine silt out of the pool and clear up the water...

How much bleach to SLAM a pool?

Thanks...I figured it was something obvious that I was missing.

How much bleach to SLAM a pool?

I've read through Pool School and I must be missing something. I found the Chlorine/CYA chart. So I know what my FC currently is, I know what my CYA is, and I know what shock level I'm trying to get to (in this case around 28 according to the chart). What I can't find is a chart that tells me...

Clean-up after 8" of rain in 5 hours - UPDATE

Thanks everyone. Sorry for the double-post and crappy test strip picture. I know you guys hate those test strips. I actually bought a Taylor Troubleshooter kit with a DPD test a few years ago...I just never use it because my pool is very easy to maintain. Just a little muriatic acid every...

Clean-up after 8" of rain in 5 hours - UPDATE

Thanks Marty. Apparently I'm too stupid to live as I now see I double posted in the same thread....so dumb. Feel free to delete the duplicate post. I can't figure out how to do it. Yes, 100% due to run-off from my yard into the pool. This just happened overnight so I haven't had a chance to...

Clean-up after 8" of rain in 5 hours - UPDATE

Sorry for the double-post. Didn't realize until after I posted that I accidentally put this in "Just Getting Started". I think this forum is the more appropriate place. We just had the worst rain event of my life here in Memphis. They're estimating that the metro area got anywhere from 8" -...

Clean-up after 8" of rain in 5 hours - UPDATE

We just had the worst rain event of my life here in Memphis. They're estimating that the metro area got anywhere from 8" - 11" over a 4 hour period last night. It's tough to say for sure because most people's rain gauges overflowed :). Anyways, my pool was nice and blue yesterday, now it...

Light fixture replacement - how hard is it really?

So the light replacement was a success! Thanks for the advice. It's so satisfying doing a job myself for $250 that the local pool store wanted $800 to do. It probably took about 4 times as long as it would have a professional because I was doing a lot of double-checking...but it should go...

    Help with pool light

Haha. I've done plenty of jobs around the house twice for the same reason. Since we're talking about underwater electrical i just decided to play it safe and order a whole new fixture. Install looks easy...just hope i don't have any problems pulling the new line through the conduit.

    Help with pool light

Thanks kadavis, I was digging through the previous homeowners' filing cabinet a few minutes ago and found the original paperwork for the pool. On the contract there are tick marks next to "Pool Light, 500W 120V"...so I think you are correct. I'm assuming that the safest thing would be to just...

    Help with pool light

OK, so I need some help. I took my light fixture out of the side of the pool and it's full of water...so that's obviously a problem. Also, my GFI on the side of the house that the light terminates at is flashing, which says that means it needs to be replaced. What would you do? 1. Try to dry...

Light fixture replacement - how hard is it really?

Thanks...think I'll give it a shot. If it was a $100 difference doing it myself vs. paying someone I'd happily pay....but a $500+ install is crazy.

Light fixture replacement - how hard is it really?

Thanks. One dumb question about the thick black wire that goes from the fixture into the side of the pool wall, through a conduit, and then out a junction box on the side of my house......is water allowed to flow into the conduit? If not, how is the water-tight seal made at the point where the...

Quick Question - Hayward Light Face Rim SPX0540A

I don't have any experience with this particular fixture, but the standard is for them to have a single screw at the 12:00 position. That's how mine is....just one screw holding it in the pool wall.

Light fixture replacement - how hard is it really?

I've troubleshot my pool light and I'm certain I need a new fixture. I'm fairly handy around the house. I've replaced pool and booster pumps, changed the sand in my filter, and fixed my pentair power center that powers my Intellichlor by replacing a PC board (even though my local pool store...

Marathon RB134 Pump buzzes and spins...then stops.

Well, the new pump was installed last night by yours truly and ran all night. I think we're back in business! Pool store wanted $650 installed ($500 for the motor). A trip to an engine shop in a weird part of town, 2 hours of my own time, and I now have a new pump running for $240.

Marathon RB134 Pump buzzes and spins...then stops.

Hey morzh...hope you're still following this thread :). I got my new pump...$200 from a local electric motor place here in town rather than a $500 pool store pump. I got home to wire it in and noticed that I have two orange (identical) wires with no distinguishing marks on them...and a green...

Marathon RB134 Pump buzzes and spins...then stops.

So....I can get a replacement Marathon pump online for $180. I realize I'd have to install it myself. I'm fairly handy...just replaced our booster pump a few months ago with no issues. Am I missing something here? My local pool stores are telling me $500ish bucks for a new Hayward...$600...

Marathon RB134 Pump buzzes and spins...then stops.

Thanks for the reply. There is a two or three minute delay before I can turn it back on...probably some sort of an over-heat safety type thing is my assumption. I was afraid it meant new motor...just wanted to be sure there wasn't something else simple.

Marathon RB134 Pump buzzes and spins...then stops.

So...went outside yesterday and noticed my pump wasn't running. It's a Marathon RB134 (catalog number) pump. When it switches on the shaft actually spins for a few seconds (i can see it turn by taking the access panel off the back) and the motor hums really loud, then it stops. I can move the...

Polaris Booster Hums for a second but won't start

Thanks! I actually replaced the capacitor on top of the pump first. It was only $14 and easy to do...and my initial reading said that was the most common part to break. Unless you're talking about a different capacitor internal to the motor I think I've already changed it...

Polaris Booster Hums for a second but won't start

Thanks James. I'm at work now so I can't take the plate off...but here's a pic of the nameplate of the motor. We just bought this house last year and some of the pool documentation is lacking...not exactly sure how old it is. Should I take the cover off when I get home and look for obvious...

Polaris Booster Hums for a second but won't start

Thanks for the tip James. I went out and tried that and unfortunately no luck. I was able to spin the shaft...but the motor still just hums then shuts off. Probably burnt out you think?

Polaris Booster Hums for a second but won't start

Upon opening our pool last weekend I noticed that our polaris booster pump will hum for a few seconds when I turn it on but won't start. I replaced the capacitor already as it seemed like that was a common thing to break that is relatively easy/cheap to fix. Are there any other easy things to...

Question for those who don't close their pool over winter

Sorry dude...it was worth a shot. You may want to replace the gauge just to be sure. It's a $10 repair and takes less than 5 minutes to change. Even if there's only a 10% chance it will fix your problem it may be worth doing.... Good luck...

Question for those who don't close their pool over winter

This was our first winter with a pool...we're in Memphis TN. I noticed my pressure gauge on the filter was skyrocketing after our harsh winter. I was panicked that something was terribly wrong. Well...what happened was the extra cold temps (we had a very cold winter for our area) broke my...
