How to Deal With Drain Full of Plaster?

My late father's house has been sold. The last time the finish was redone, the contractor got plaster in the main drain. My dad did not force them to repair it, and now the pool can't be drained in the usual way. Eventually, the buyers will need to have it drained so the drain line can be...

How to Capture DE During Backwash?

I assume what I read was typical environmentalist claptrap, but it sounded so insane, I had to ask. It would be nice to have a way to keep DE off my driveway and lawn. My trouble-free filter was a cartridge filter, not sand. I typed "sand" by mistake.

    Tough, Economical 2 HP Pump?

Let's hope this one lasts longer than my last Hayward. FYI, you mentioned this earlier in this thread. Do you know whether they'll ban replacement motors and other parts?

How to Capture DE During Backwash?

It goes shooting out of the backwash hose, and I have to refill the filter with DE.

How to Capture DE During Backwash?

I have a feeling I'm asking about something people prefer not to talk about, but here goes. I read that I'm supposed to put used DE in a container and "dispose of it properly." How do I put DE in a container when it comes shooting out of a hose at 100 gallons per minute? I think I may dump my...

    Tough, Economical 2 HP Pump?

A manufacturer of VS pumps told me a VS pump would not save me money. I called to order one, and they steered me toward a single-speed pump. That's good enough for me.

    Tough, Economical 2 HP Pump?

Thank goodness for the brilliance of the nanny state. Given the quality of pool hardware, two years is about as long as I expect my new one to last. It will be great to pay double the price and get zero reduction in energy costs.

    Tough, Economical 2 HP Pump?

I got some advice and determined that a variable-speed pump would end up costing more in the long run, so I went with a Hayward Super Pump. I know these pumps are low quality, because I've had two fail, but Amazon offers a 3-year warranty for $76, so hopefully I will be covered when this one...

    Tough, Economical 2 HP Pump?

I'm trying to get advice from Hayward, but they have a 34-minute wait when you call.

    Tough, Economical 2 HP Pump?

Thanks for the reply. It's not a spa. It's a few little nozzles that shoot at your back when you sit on the steps. Silly, really. I have never used it. The "waterfall" is a little slit a foot above the pool, and water shoots out of it. The 2-HP Pentair runs the waterfall and vacuums pretty...

    Tough, Economical 2 HP Pump?

I am thinking maybe I should change tactics and splurge on a VS pump, but it appears that the manufacturers don't like to share data with end users. Does anyone know whether a 1.5-HP Pentair Superflo will serve me as well as my current pump? I believe my pool is 20,000 gallons, based on online...

    Tough, Economical 2 HP Pump?

The current pump is a Pentair MPRA6G-155L. Seems to power the pool with no problems apart from the motor failing due to its open design.

    Tough, Economical 2 HP Pump?

My 2 HP Pentair pump is not doing well. The motor is making an interesting noise, and the housing has cracks which are too numerous to repair. What's a good economical pump to replace it? I just want reliability. It doesn't have to be wi-fi enabled or make espresso.

    Wire Brush Okay for Gunite?

I've been using a wire brush on my gunite pool, and it seems like a lot of junk ended up in the filter. Is it better to use nylon? I'm afraid what's going into the filter is gunite. Amazon lists a lot of nylon brushes, but the ads say they're for vinyl pools.

    Green Stuff on Screen Enclosure

My pool is screened in. The enclosure is bronze-toned aluminum. Green stuff is growing on the screens and frame. What's the best way to get rid of it? Is there a way to prevent it from growing?

Vacuum that Catches Crud Before it Gets to Filter?

Last year I wanted to vacuum my pool, so I got a cheap vacuum thing and a hose. Problem: the Crud I vacuum up goes into the filter, so I have to backwash and add DE every time I vacuum. Is there something better out there? I don't want an expensive gadget that cleans the pool by itself, but I...

Reinstalling Sta-Rite S8D110 Clamps So They Don't Leak

Thanks for the reply. I was talking about the entire filter, not something that would use an O-ring. I finally got it working. I had to make sure the clamps were aligned carefully before tightening them, because they do not align themselves.

Reinstalling Sta-Rite S8D110 Clamps So They Don't Leak

I am trying to get my filter to stop leaking. I try following the instructions (alternating sides as I tighten clamps), but the filter still leaks. Is there a trick to this?

How do I Make Swimquip Slide Valve Stop Leaking Around Shaft?

I have a Sta-Rite DE filter (S8D110) with a Swimquip slided valve. The slide valve leaks at the top. I replaced the O-rings, and it doesn't help. The O-ring that is supposed to prevent leakage around the shaft is a #014 ring. It goes up against the underside of the lid. There is no seat for...

Generic O-Rings for Pentair Backwash Valve?

Searched for a long time, gave up and posted a question, and then found the answer in a few minutes. Sorry about that. In case anyone else wants the information, I will provide it. O-rings come in different hardness grades, and I believe the correct one here is 70 Durometer. #331 (2-1/4" ID x...

Generic O-Rings for Pentair Backwash Valve?

Does anyone here know the specs for generic O-rings to fit a Pentair 14930 slide backwash valve? I don't want to spend $20 for $3 worth of O-rings, and I don't want to spend a week waiting for Ebay. If I have the specs, I can go to the hardware store.

Output Keeps Dropping Quickly; Lots of Algae

I found out one of my filter elements has a small tear in it, and the bleed apparatus had fallen off due to age. This was what caused crud to appear on the bottom of the pool and gave the algae a new place to grow. DE was leaving the filter and shooting out into the pool. I have ordered a new...

The filter is a Sta-Rite System 3 that takes diatomaceous earth. I guess it needs cleaning.

Output Keeps Dropping Quickly; Lots of Algae

My pool is free of algae. I have been running the pump around the clock. I have been backwashing it once or twice a day. The flow still drops within a couple of hours of backwashing. I can't figure this out. What could be clogging a filter over and over, within a short time? Very little gets...

Output Keeps Dropping Quickly; Lots of Algae

I put so much chlorine in it, it's unpleasant to breathe the air by the pool. I'll keep nuking it over the next few days.

Output Keeps Dropping Quickly; Lots of Algae

If I could snap my fingers and make the pool disappear, I would do it. I can't, so I want as little aggravation as possible. One of the problems with buying a home in Florida is that you're likely to get stuck with a pool whether you want one or not.
