Lowering water level AFTER adding winterizing chems?

It's not really mainly a question of cost savings - I just want as much of the chems to be in the water all winter as possible, otherwise seems like a bit of a waste. I think it'd be much more than 4" total... the jets are fairly low on the wall. I do usually lower the water level pretty low...

Lowering water level AFTER adding winterizing chems?

Hi all, On my pool closing cheat sheet, I wrote down to lower the water level below the return jets after adding liquid chlorine and polyquat 60, but now that I think about it, that sounds like a bad idea because I'm basically dumping out chemicals I just bought... I have one skimmer basket on...

    Liquid Chlorine storage

There is, but I'd rather settle with 11% chlorine than lug a 5 gallon jug up and down out of my basement or carry it across my house from my garage. (The pool is on the opposite side of the house as the garage.) :) I usually dump about 3 quarts a day into the pool when it's super sunny out and...

    Liquid Chlorine storage

Interesting, thanks for the link! Other than degrading, is it any more dangerous when stored in a deck box in the sun all day vs. a deck box in the shade? Thanks!

    Liquid Chlorine storage

I am in a similar situation with the OP but I have one of those big brown plastic deck boxes by our fence around the pool and it's actually in the sun most of the day. I've been getting the big blue 5 gal. jugs of Superchlor from my local Ace Hardware. You're not supposed to store liquid...

Stabilizer / CYA Sock Method Seems Way Too Slow - Other Options?

I just checked it today and the CYA is 40. If I'm super strict on being able to see the black dot, mayyybe it could get closer to 30, but I'm almost positive it's 40. I'll recheck the math tomorrow morning!

Stabilizer / CYA Sock Method Seems Way Too Slow - Other Options?

Alright thanks everyone! I'll squeeze out the rest of it and use a nylon sock next time. I've kinda been keeping the FC at 10 anyway. But I haven't mentally been in full-on SLAM mode. :D I'm using hth stabilizer and in my past experience the actual amount I got out of the sock was about double...

Stabilizer / CYA Sock Method Seems Way Too Slow - Other Options?

Hi all, so I've had my ~2 lbs. of stabilizer granules-filled sock in the skimmer basket since Saturday evening and I've been giving it a good squeeze maybe 2 or 3 times a day but it's been at 20 CYA this whole time. It seems the only way the stabilizer actually comes out of the sock is when I...

Second Ever Pool Opening, Green Monster This Time Around :(

Got it, thanks @mknauss! I re-checked when my FC was below 10 and it's exactly 7.2 now! Woo.

Second Ever Pool Opening, Green Monster This Time Around :(

Weird, does adding CYA increase the pH? I only had about 0.25 lbs of slow-n-lo left, which I figured wouldn't do much... but I added that at like 6:30, then put the CYA sock in around 6:45 and I just checked my pH at like 8:15 and it's 8.2+! Do I have to wait for all of the CYA to dissolve...

Second Ever Pool Opening, Green Monster This Time Around :(

Thanks guys! I can't remember what I had the CYA at when I closed, but I think it was pretty low (for me) likely around 40. I drained the water to about 8" below the return jets, so maybe thats why I lost the CYA, we've had a lot of rain the past month or more, so it's been gettin a lot of new...

Second Ever Pool Opening, Green Monster This Time Around :(

Hey all, So I this is my first time closing AND opening in succession... 2 autumns ago I had a pool store close the pool, then in Spring I opened it to see fairly decent/clear water! I closed the pool myself last fall (withOUT polyquat) and this Spring is... a different story! (Noooooo!)...

Closing Pool for Winter - Did I use enough antifreeze?

So I think I used enough antifreeze! No problems with suction etc. after hooking up the pump yesterday and lowering the level after all rain we had and all the snow melted. Good to know!

Is it necessary to drain a winterized pool early?

Hi all, My neighbor told me to be sure to drain the pool as soon as it fills up with rain before opening the pool. (I didn't ask why though!) They use chlorine pucks and blame acid rain for turning their water cloudy, so I take what they say w/ a grain of salt. :) I've only closed/winterized...

    How to Add Superchlor?

Ohh okay! Yeah I use those blue super-chlor returnable jugs too. They last a while! I was just trying to make the pouring/measuring out part easier. The spigot came with a small gasket embedded in the plastic, but must be it's not big enough or I'm not tightening it enough or something. Thanks...

    How to Add Superchlor?

Hi Richard, last summer I bought this spigot but it leaked a little whenever I tipped the 5 gal jug over. :( I tried putting tape around the opening but it didn't help. Could you please recommend a good (70mm?) spigot that works well and doesn't leak? Thanks!!

Closing Pool for Winter - Did I use enough antifreeze?

Thanks! I haven't had an failures in the skimmer or winter plugs, and when I took the plugs off in the Spring, I heard & saw the air pushing out into the pool water, from the air trapped in the lines, so I think I'll be alright. If I understand it correctly, the antifreeze is just basically an...

Closing Pool for Winter - Did I use enough antifreeze?

Hi all, Last year I closed & opened my pool myself thanks to this site, and it went great!! This year I'm doing it a second time and I want to try switching it up just a little bit. Can you guys let me know if this sounds alright? I live in upstate NY and it can get crazy cold, like -14ºF...

    How to Add Superchlor?

Ok great, thanks! I found a bucket I had in the basement that has quart/gallon marks on the inside of it, score! How do people pour these giant 5gal jugs? Is there some kinda funnel you can buy and twist it on or something? Haha. I got some on our stone path, the worms were not happy.

    How to Add Superchlor?

Hi all, I've been adding 128oz jugs of liquid chlorine here and there as needed. Yesterday I upgraded though and picked up a huge 5gal blue jug of "Superchlor". Does the PoolMath calculator work the same way as with 128oz jugs? I changed "10% trade bleach" to "12.5%" (since Superchlor has...

First Nice n' Easy Opening! Chem Levels Included!

Hey man, thanks a bunch! Ah-ha ok, good call. After draining the pool about 4 times last summer and re-filling (to lower my CYA) I feel like I'll probably always be worried about adding too much stabilizer, lol. Cool, good to know re: the TA and pH. I read that adding baking soda will increase...

First Nice n' Easy Opening! Chem Levels Included!

Early last Summer I opened the pool myself (a local pool co. closed it the previous Fall). The water was green and nasty and I was just getting started with TFP. I dunno if it's just the TFP method or that I waited too long to open the pool last year, but I just took off the safety cover, got...

Replacing Pentair SuperFlo SF-N1-1A pump with Hayward SP2307X10 - wrong port size??

Hi all, I bought a Hayward SP2307X10 which says it has 1.5" x 2" port sizes but they are visibly larger than my old Pentair pump being replaced. The outer dimensions of the ports on my old Pentair seem to be a little over 2.5", including the threads. According to the pentair site, the ports are...

    A few winterizing questions/clarifications

thanks for the info! But once the air is locked in, how would you get antifreeze into there? You'd have to open the valve and water would rush back in, and you're back where you started right? Ohh okay, so they just lock the air in the main drain pipe, without antifreeze? Got it, thanks. I...
