    Need new cleaner

We have had to make lots of repairs to our Polaris 380, as it's 10 years old and expected I guess. Now we have a leak we can't seem to get fixed to the booster pump, and that is adding to the inability of the Polaris to really clean the pool well. So...thinking about getting a robot. We are...

    Berm or no Berm

Do yourself a favor...no pea gravel. Ever. I regret the day I decided "no, the bigger rocks are way more expensive, lets just use pea gravel".

Would freezing temps cause filter pressure to be high?

I'm not really sure. Don't want to stick my hands in the pool to feel the return! I guess I need to though, to determine if there is a problem with the pressure side of the system, or a problem with the gauge. I was just wondering if a filter could become "frozen" and that would explain the...

Would freezing temps cause filter pressure to be high?

Yes, when off, it drops to zero, and when pump is on low, it drops to about 5 (usually reads 1-2psi on low).

Would freezing temps cause filter pressure to be high?

Here in SC we have had about 2 weeks of freezing temps. Most days it gets into the mid 30's to mid 40's. My pool filter usually reads about 17 psi normally when pump is on high. I have been running pump on high 24/7 to prevent any freezing in my lines, but I've just noticed 2 days ago (don't...

    Edging ideas for pool decking

Don't do what we did. We have about 3 feet of landscaping around our pool deck, and mulched with PEA GRAVEL. I hate that stuff. It ends up on the pool deck and we step on it (Ouch!) or it ends up in the pool. And we have a liner! I wish we had spent the extra money for the bigger rocks that...

    Polaris 380 housing loose

It is one big molded piece. When the housing is not seated properly in the front, water shoots out of the housing, so it doesn't pick up debris. I'll see if I can get a picture of it.

    Polaris 380 housing loose

The blue housing of my Polaris 380 is slightly loose in the front, and it won't clean the pool. I've looked at it (sort of, it's cold out there), and I can't figure out why the housing won't stay seated in the front of the unit. I'm assuming that this is the reason it won't pick up leaves. I...

Run backwash hose back into pool

An update...Got the multiport valve fixed this morning! It didn't even need a new gasket, the handle just needed to be lubed with some WD-40 so it would move properly and seat itself. I watched the repair guy do the whole thing, and it was so easy! He showed me how to replace the gasket...

Help with multiport valve and spider gasket

I just wanted to let you know that your instructions were spot on! Finally got the repair guy to come out this morning, and I watched him do the whole thing. It turned out I didn't even need a new gasket, the handle was just stuck and needed to be lubed. The repair guy removed the bolts, and...

    undissolved cal hypo

I use chlorine tabs (trichlor) in an autochlorinator sometimes to increase my CYA or chlorinate while I'm on vacation. I think I read somewhere that I shouldn't put cal hypo in the skimmer, because there is a risk that some of it will get to the autochlorinator where there may be traces of...

Run backwash hose back into pool

I know I could most likely fix this myself, but I just don't have the confidence! So I'm going to watch the person I hired to do this, so that when it happens again, I will do it myself!

Run backwash hose back into pool

OK, before you think I'm nuts (why would anyone want to backwash INTO the pool), I am awaiting a repair to my multiport valve, and cannot run my pump on any valve setting, because water keeps coming out of my backwash hose. Is there any reason I can't continue to run my pump on FILTER, and...

Help with multiport valve and spider gasket

Well, here's an update for you...tried to backwash the filter this morning, and when I put the valve back in the filter position, water still comes out. I've tried for 15 minutes, moving it around to make sure it was "seated" properly...no luck. Sometimes the handle won't even stay up, so I...

Help with multiport valve and spider gasket

Before I call a repair person, I like to have an idea about what something costs to repair. Being a woman, I just want to make sure the repair person does not take advantage of me because they "think" I know nothing about the pool! Truth is, I'm the only one in my house that knows anything...

I need to help my boss with Black Algae!

UPDATE: My boss told me they bought "unstabilized" granular shock and used that to shock her pool, and rented a scuba tank and went in and scrubbed the black spots with a chlorine tablet. They won't switch from using the chlorine tabs, so I guess she will handle things on her own now!

I need to help my boss with Black Algae!

I agree Dave! I tried that first. Now I am looking for you guys to spell it out, so I can print out this thread and say "there's your answer". They think I'm crazy to pour "laundry bleach" into my pool!

I need to help my boss with Black Algae!

My boss has a gunite in-ground pool with spots of Black Algae appearing in the pool. She uses either Tri-Chlor or Di-Chlor tablets exclusively for chlorination. I tested her water for her (I have the good Taylor kit), and here were her numbers: FC zero CYA well over 100 (100 is the highest my...

Uncommon for backwash water to be bright yellow?

In the spring, my backwash water is often yellow, due to pollen. I guess the filter is doing what it is supposed to by catching the pollen.

    Adjust PH or TA first?

Great, I'll add half the recommended amount of Borax first, retest for PH and TA, and then go from there. I may also cut on my deck jets to see if the aeration will bring it up some. I tend to overshoot when adjusting my PH, then have to go get muriatic acid. Thanks!

    Adjust PH or TA first?

I need to raise my PH and my TA. I have an in-ground vinyl, and use BBB almost exclusively. Does it matter whether I put in the Borax or Baking Soda first? I think I've heard that TA should be adjusted first, is it possible that if I raise my TA, my PH will come up some also just from adding...

    What's your current pool temp?

I hear you about the pizza oven/lobster pot thing! I'm right below you in SC. 5 days ago, finally bought a new pool thermometer, pool temp was at 92 degrees! I like my water warm, but not that warm, especially when it's 99 degrees outside! Now it's cooled off to 88, with the slightly cooler...

Man! Did I get the looks today at Aldi's !!!

So I'm not the only one who gets accused of this! Right after we built our pool and I discovered the BBB method, I had a bag boy in the grocery store ask me if I was cooking meth. I had to go home and google it to find out what bleach had to do with meth! But I'm going to start using the...

Is it ok to have low TA?

Now that we are kicking back into high gear with the pool, I'm testing and see that my TA is 40. I remember last year I had to add stuff a few times because my TA drifts down. Is there a reason (other than to try to stabilize PH) that low TA is bad? I have a vinyl pool, with a heater that we...

Plants for landscaping around the pool

Need suggestions I am in SC, zone 8. I have liriope next to my pool deck, and 2 windmill palms. I am getting ready to add some ornamental grasses in clumps around the outside of the pool deck. I have a space next to my raised deck (about 10 feet from the water's edge) where I would like to...

    Filter gauge going bad?

Ok, I have replaced the pressure gauge. I think it was a combination of the old gauge giving an incorrect reading, and all the pollen in the pool causing the filter to get dirty and the pressure to go up. The new gauge is showing that pressure is increasing, just not as much. I am backwashing...

    Need recommendations for timer

Another question...my pump is a 2 speed (1.5/.25), so I guess that means it runs at .25 HP on low. I run it now 24/7 on low. We live in S.C., so it gets hot here in the summer. My water temps get up in the mid 90's in the hottest part of the summer. I'm very afraid of having the water just...

    Filter gauge going bad?

My pool and equipment have been installed for nearly 2 years. Lately, I've noticed a problem where, my filter pressure gauge reads high, so I check to make sure all the return valves are open (husband sometimes monkeys with things!), and then I can cut the pump completely off, wait a minute...

    Need recommendations for timer

We have a 2 speed pump, that I have run on low 95% of the time, in the 2 years since we built the pool. I really don't want to put a timer on it (something about the water just sitting there not circulating bothers me!) but hubby says we must try to cut down on elec usage. Can a timer be used...
