New EVO 614i Robot Pool Cleaner Review

@Uhhello

Seems like Az pools get a lot of dust, so you might be able to tell better than me how well it picks up fine material, and how well it covers the whole pool.

When Marina has a robot in stock, it is pretty hard to beat their price and delivery...

I hope it works well for you.

Thanks,

Jim R.

I have the S400 and I'm on year 2.5 and I'm probably jinxing myself here but I haven't had a cord tangle yet. Now I take my robot out after every time I used it and store on the caddy with the cord stored in a loop. So far no issues and it runs 2.5 hours floor only as I haven't had the need to run it on the walls (fiberglass pool probably helps that). So I'm curious that you have cord tangles right away,I wonder why that is? What am I missing?

I did not have cord tangles right away. I normally only use the robot at my pool every few days. I normally take the robot out of the pool and lay the cable on the deck. When I do that, my cables (EVO or Dolphin) do not tangle. I have rent house pools where the robots run every day and never come out of the pool except to clean the basket. Their cables tangle, sometimes a little, and some times they can actually tie themselves into a knot. :mrgreen:

When I first got the EVO, I ran it several times in a row, on purpose, without ever taking it out of the pool. This is when the cable tangled. If I treat it like I would normal do, then the cable does not seem to tangle. I guess my thought was that the swivel looked impressive, so I assumed it would keep the cable from tangling, but that was not the case when the robot was run for several cycles in a row.

Thanks,

Jumping onto this robot review, thanks Jim! :cheers:
Hard to believe the screen will filter the fines as well as the fibrous pleats but I am keeping an open mind. Maybe try a hair net mod?

@Oly

I had the same thought... Of course there is no scientific proof of what I am saying, but looking at the material that the EVO picked up and what the Dolphin picked up, I can't visually tell any difference. When I get a chance, I'll take a pic of the dirty EVO screen filter and post it.

Maybe we can get @Uhhello to post his findings once he's had a chance to run his new robot. I hear that Az pools can get pretty dusty..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Wonder if it will grab pollen like the fine pleat and inner fine filter of the dolphin?

Thanks for the great review Jim! The filter comparison was of particular interest to me. I'm in AZ and the dual filter in my Active 30 (S300) has been great for holding the fine dust that can accumulate on the bottom of pools in desert regions. In your opinion, is the Evo filter fine enough to collect an hold dust sediment? Or do you happen to know if they make fine or dual-stage version?

Excellent write up, Jim! Thanks for taking the time to do this.

I am surprised that there is no ability to 'drive' the unit with the app, but as you said, that may be forthcoming. I can see with the dual drive motors, that maneuvering the unit should be much easier than the Dolphin since the Dolphin uses a jet of water to turn left/right. I thought I might use that feature on the Dolphin, until I realized how much an exercise in futility it was to get it to actually go where I wanted it to. I might actually use this feature on the EVO if it does come to fruition.

I think I have dual drive motors on my M500. They dont make steering it any easier. The latency between giving the command and it actually doing it is frustratingly slow. So basically in the about 5 years I have had the unit I have used that feature 4 times.

Katodude,

I agree. I don't see me driving it around...

I normally do not buy any 'special' features when I buy a robot. I find most of them useless.. I had a Dolphin Premier and a remote.. I used the remote the first day I had it and never used it again. That one lasted over 7 years before it died.

Since this EVO came with the app control included, I'll be interested in seeing how well it works. Assuming it gets updated like it is supposed to be. We will see.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Agree 100%. Yeah, I didn't buy it because it had that feature... I bought it because I wanted a caddy and that was about the same as buying the cheaper one and adding a caddy. I used it to try it out but found it too cumbersome and eventually thought "why the heck am I trying to drive this thing... I bought it so I could NOT have to stand here and vacuum!"

Matt,

If you are thinking the pool is leaking, I don't think that is the case as the ground water problem started long before the pool ever had any water in it. It took about 4 months of the pool builder trying all kinds of magic stop leak stuff, none of which worked, before they dug up 50 feet of new deck and added the sump pump and French drains on two sides of the pool.

What were you thinking that I might find??

Thanks,

Jim R.
