Pentair Intelliflo VSF showing "D. R. Stop"

Hi all,

I have the intelliflo vsf - so far I like it overall for its efficiency, programmability, and low noise-level.

The pump stopped running all of a sudden today during it's regular programmed cycle and is showing "D. R. Stop" on the screen in the bottom left corner, along with 0 rpm, 0 watts, and the other normal stuff it shows while running. No errors or alarms, just the d.r. stop. When I click stop it shows that it is stopped, and then I click start and it spins up like normal and runs smoothly and I can see the water moving, and then stops again with the same "D. R. Stop" message after about 10 seconds of run time.

For context the DE filter is regularly backflushed was recently deep-cleaned, the catch basket on the pump is clear/empty, and everything seems to be in good working order.

Anyone experience this before or know what it is referencing by "D. R. Stop"? I did some pretty deep google/youtube dives and even searched through pdf manuals and couldn't find any helpful information. I'm relatively new to pool pumps but I'm a strong DiYer and have fixed many an electric motor/pump.

Thanks in advance for any assistance. Feel free to point me to a link or whatever is easiest.

Zach

Welcome to the forum.
What model Intelliflo do you have?
I assume you do not have automation.

Thank you! My pump is the Intelliflo VSF (3.0hp/3.95sfhp) from about 6-7 years ago. You are correct, I just run programs on the built-in, no additional automation. It's also hooked up to a circupool RJ-45 salt cell, and a hayward DE filter.

Thanks for your time and assistance!

Zach,

Do any of the other programs work?

I have never heard of D.R. Stop.

If you don't get an answer, you can do a factory reset.

Thanks,

Jim R.
Thanks for your reply! None of the other programs work. I have a few egg timer and a manual program. They all cut out with the same D. R. Stop message after about 10 seconds. I tried powering down and back up, but I will try a factory reset this evening.

Thanks so much for your time and consideration.

Okay so to close the loop on this for now and note down all the info I have (which is really nothing, sorry!) - I went back and forth with Pentair support online a bit (they were very responsive and good at getting back to me soon after each email I sent, but I'm sure this varies case-by-case). After a lot of back and forth about warranty information, they basically helped me narrow it down to "an issue with the drive," and then sent me the contact info for some technicians in my area.

After digging around a bit more myself, the pump started working again. All I did was reset the main and sub-panel breakers, as well as a gcfi that powers some of the LED lighting around the pool deck and garden (none of these were tripped, and I had already done this a few days ago minus the gcfi, but I reset them again anyway). I also discovered a sensor wire that had been partially chewed through by, I'm guessing, a rodent. This wire was for the flow sensor for the salt chlorinator, so I don't think it had anything to do with the D.R.Stop code, but I fixed it and figured I'd list everything I did in case it's meaningful in some way. The pump seems to work now, after about a week of it throwing that D. R. Stop code. If I had to guess, maybe one of the breakers/gcfi has a loose connection, and my resetting them all jostled it back into circuit. I will be going through all of the connections tomorrow just to re-torque everything and make sure it's clean. I had forgotten and not made the potential connection until yesterday, but we did have a neighbor's house up the street get struck by lightning a few days before I noticed the error on my pump (again, not sure if relevant, just a novice looking for answers here). The utility company and some other electricians were there doing work all week. So, maybe that played a role.

Anyway, I appreciate the feedback, and I'm sorry my conclusion here is not more informative. If it occurs again or I learn anything new, I'll be sure to append it here.

Thanks,
Zach

I'll gladly take something fixing itself without knowing why, over knowing what's wrong for $2000.

Any. Day. Of. The. Week.

May we never find out.

It is very curious that that “error code” if that is what it was, is not documented anywhere online and even in the pump manual, and it appears even the Pentair techs didn’t really know what it was. I have the same pump and I’ve also never seen that code. I’m glad it’s working normally again!

I found this post while researching the error while I had a really knowledgeable solar service person at my house for some work who knew a lot about the pump as well.

He fixed this issue in a few minutes for us and though he didn't know what the error stands for or means, he found a blockage in my skimmer that was limiting flow. It was just an inconveniently placed piece of debris. The pump was working fine a day before. He sorted that and immediately there was no more error or shut offs. He thinks it was detecting the flow issue or maybe air coming in and was shutting off to preserve itself from burning out.

I am a new pool owner and I know very little, but he knew a lot and it fixed the problem for me. Hopefully it will help others as well.
