Jandy JXI 400 ignition fault

My 5 year old Jandy JXI-400 NG is throwing an ignition fault and not igniting/heating. When it is attempting to start, the exhaust is blowing and I can smell gas each of the 3 times it tries to start. After some initial research I ordered a new ignitor and replaced it. The old ignitor element came out completely obliterated but the new ignitor didn't fix the issue. It still won't start. Coincidence or not, just a week prior to this issue, I needed to replace the high limit temperature sensor.

Is there anything else I can do before bringing in a real technician?

Smelling gas does not mean you have proper gas pressures. Gas pressure at the gas valve should be checked with a manometer both static and when the heater is starting.

Does the heater briefly ignite and you get a puff of heat and then shuts down? If so you may have have a flame sensing problem. Heater Flame Sensing describes what may be happening and ways to fix it.

Was the new ignitor the old spiral design or a straight piece?

After installing check the resistance of the ignitor with a multimeter. A new ignitor should read approximately 40-90 ohms.

No signs at all that it ever ignites.

It was the old spiral design. I'll check it with a multimeter.

Thanks.

Get the new ignitor design...

The ignitor reads 57 ohms. Is there a chance it's still bad? I don't really want to spend $60 on another ignitor just to find out the issue is something else.

Also, should I be concerned about where the rest of this ended up?

Ignitors are a consumable. I have replaced it 2x in 6 seasons (so original plus 2 more). I always keep a spare. I think I might actually have 2 spares at the moment.

Another strange thing, to me.. There is some salt residue on the the old failed ignitor (salt water pool). Is there any way pool water can leak around there? After replacing the high temp limit switch a few weeks ago, I was surprised how humid the exhaust was...almost like a steam bath.

Is there any way to tell if my heat exchanger is still intact?

If someone can find my heater core replacement thread and post the link that would help. I'll look later. Shine a flashlight in the ignitor hole and see if you see any water.

Yeah I have that diagram but it doesn't show you what has to be done to open up access to the exchanger.

Get out a set of wrenches and you pretty much take it all apart. Unpeel the onion...
