Leaving In-Ground Pool all winter empty no liner

Is the builder still installing (working on) the pool? If so, I would think he's responsible for any damage done by weather on an empty shell.

Your walls appear more protected than many that use just a liner and count on the water pressure against the walls to hold them up.

Keep us posted...

I most worried about the walls caving in but maybe that’s not an issue. They backfilled with gravel. A slight bow on one wall but it’s not noticeable honestly. I just don’t want it getting worse

I'm a few hours further north, but when my liner was replaced several years ago, the installer was telling me about another pool. The owners left it empty over the winter, and didn't brace it. Ground water froze, which then damaged the pool sides, pushing them into the pool. Soooooo, if you're going to leave it empty, and it's not the pool builders responsibility if it gets damaged over winter, maybe go grab some 2x4 and plywood and build some bracing????

+1. It could be a series of smaller storms in a row, or one biggie. Minor area flooding with the pool empty can cause catastrophic problems.

I also agree that the PB is on the hook for any damage before they finish. But you also don't want a possible 2 year lawsuit just to win a judgment that the PB can't afford to pay. So I'd brace the walls.

...or risk a liner install in the cold? ...might be better to see a few wrinkles than the larger risk of a brand new pool collapse.

Are you even sure this builder will be around in the Spring? How sure are you they’ll be around long enough to fix any long term issues that may arise from this gamble?? Do they plan on redoing the vermiculite next Spring on their dime as I’ll put serious money it’s destroyed over the winter.

If it were myself I’d place the liner itself in a very warm area and leave it there for several days. Then tent and heat the pool area and push the builder to finish this job. It’ll stink for them to do it……but you’re talking a large gamble IMHO leaving it.
