I noticed that my pool equipment stops working if the pool cleaner is not attached. I’m assuming this happens because the cover to the air cleaner inlet closes once detached and prevents any water flow.

How then can I keep the equipment running if I want the cleaner detached?

What model pool cleaner are we discussing?

Post pics of your equipment pad, the cleaner, and the inlet that closes.

M,

I assume you mean the pump has no water when the vacuum is disconnected. If that is true, then your valves are not set up correctly.

Show us several pics of your equipment pad so we can get you pointed in the right direction.

Thanks,

Jim R.

Yes, sounds right.

M,

I am usually pretty good at figuring plumbing out, but yours has me a little puzzled.

Tell me about the automated valve that is right in front of your main pump. Does that valve move when you change from the pool mode to the spa mode? Or does it move when you use "turn on" the vacuum.

There are three inputs to your main pump. Do you know where each of the three pipes go?

Thanks,

Jim R.

Jim,

Both valves circled in red move when it switches to spa mode. The valve circled in yellow does not function. I believe it was for a fountain that no longer exists.

And I do not know how to turn only turn on the vacuum. It always turns on when the it’s in pool mode.

I inherited this equipment when I bought the house, so I’m not the original owner.

M,

Looking at the right Red valve, was the pic taken when in the spa mode?

This is what is puzzling me. There is only one line coming into the pump. If you are in the Pool mode, I would have assumed the Automated valve would have been turned the opposite way.

Did the vac work just fine in the past, and now no longer works??

Thanks,

Jim R.

It was in spa mode when the picture was taken.

I don’t remember having issues with the vacuum in the past when it was disconnected from the pool. I recently had the control panel upgraded, so there could have been some settings changed. That’s the only thing I can think of.

The valve that is immediately to the left (in the picture) of the automated suction valve should be the one that adjusts between the skimmer and cleaner port. It shows the skimmer almost completely closed. The 2" plumbing would be to the skimmer, the 1.5" to the cleaner port. As close as that handle is to the valve to its right, it may not be easy to open the line more. My need to grip the stem lightly, after removing the handle, with a pliers to move it, unless there is more room than there appears to be.

M,

If you turn the valve the poolman is talking about so that it only runs the vac, then when you remove the vac, the pump will get no water.

I would set that valve in the middle, so that the skimmer and vac both get the same amount of suction.

Try that and see if it helps.

Thanks,

Jim R.
