Help with chlorine

I used a citric acid stain remover product in my pool and now I cannot keep any chlorine in the pool. It gets eaten up immediately. I checked the CYA and it is 60ppm. I added 72 oz of liquid 12% chlorine yesterday evening and today it is at ZERO! I don't know what to do???? I added some hose water (about 2") yesterday but still isn't helping. The only good news is that the pool is clear water and no signs of algae yet. PH 7.8 Alk 70ppm

Hi Kabs,

Check out this recent thread...same issue. Take note of the responses by @JoyfulNoise.

That other thread covers it will. Continually feeding small amounts of chlorine until it begins to hold.

Don't wast all your FAS/DPD tests for this, stop by Walmart or maybe Lowes/Home Depot and pick up a cheap OTO chlorine test kit. You just need to be able to see when chlorine starts to hold int eh water. Then switch back to your FAS/DPD tests.

HOw long will it take? Its been over a week and I can't keep chlorine in it, the liquid chlorine is $5 per gallon here and this is getting expensive.

Sadly, there is no way to say exactly how long it will take. The more citric acid yo used the longer it takes.

I'll quote Matt from the previous post

Well, like ascorbic acid, it’s going to react with chlorine until it’s all used up. So you’ll just have to keep adding FC slowly and in small doses until it holds. If you SLAM, the steps will stain again.

And next time, if you can, use ascorbic acid. Chlorine reacts with citric acid and can form chloroform and other nastier chlorinated organics. They’ll offgas and go away but it could cause eye/skin irritation until it does. Ascorbic acid is much safer.
