Houston, TX No-Shade Pool Owners, how much FC loss

It's brutal this year in Texas. With the heat and lots of sunshine, I'm adding 5.5 FC every day to keep up. Performed (and passed) an OCLT just to make sure there wasn't anything else consuming my FC.

When you say you Are adding 5.5 FC, do you mean you are supplementing the FC produced by your SWG with 5.5 bleach? Or do you just mean that your SwG has to produce 5.5 per day?

Sorry if that’s a dumb question. I ask because I’m think of SWG and like you I lose ~5.5/day now. OCLT passes.

Hello Grey. I'm in Katy--old Katy just north of Katy City Park and off Avenue D. We're on the edge of the ancient Katy Prairie, and the south wind blows here pretty much all the time, except some of the winter when it blows from the north. I've notice this year more than last at setting of 40% on my Pentair IC-40 SWCG has a harder time maintaining 6ppm FC. My approach when both FC and CYA are low is to put some tabs in a floater and the floater in the spa, which spills over into the pool. We have run the heater more than last year, and I'm sure the wind and sun take their toll. I've also this year had a lot more seed pods from nearby Purple Vitex flowering trees. Another thing you've probably heard is the Sahara dust which keeps the sky from being blue, and which also quietly settles into the pool, but other than creating a bit of mud for the the robot, I don't know about its impact on a pool or pool chemistry.

I add muriatic acid a couple times a week, but just a couple cups worth. Last drop in FC I used the floater as well as bumping the IC-40 up to 50%, and that brought FC from 5 to 9 in five days. I also put some stabilizer in a sock to get the CYA up faster than just the tabs alone. The pump runs at 1600rpm 8am to 8pm with the IC40 also running that schedule. With our mini drought, I've added water a couple times. Sometimes I overshoot with adjustments, preferring FC to be high rather than low.

Incidentally, I think I read your reference to a possible Hayward T15 SWCG being considered? The general recommendation I've read here is for a SWCG with double the capacity of your pool. I'm not familiar with the T15, but if the 15 refers to gallons, then that may be a bit small. My 15k gallon pool is running a Pentair IC40 (the 40 refers to gallons of capacity at 24 hrs a day). In winter it runs around 8-10% for ten hours. Now it's 12 hrs at 40%. You can see from my Poolmath logs the swings I've had.

Just tested again. I think yesterday's CYA must have been a mistake. Tested twice today, and it's back at 60 and FC at 7. Yesterday was at 2pm (CDT); today at 4:45, and the water temp is up to 91 from yesterday's 89. After yesterday's test, I turned the IC40 down from 50% to 40%. Wind comparable 22mph yesterday, 23mph today. It's windy here on the prairie. This may be too much info, but I'm trying to give you what I'm seeing in a similar environment.
The T15 is rated for 40,000 gal.

Curious… you mention wind several times. I’m in Grand Lakes, near Peek and Fry. It gets pretty windy here as well. What does wind have to do with FC or pool chemistry?? :)

I have wondered that also, but I have to believe wind causes an increase in FC consumption. In dry environments like ours, wind brings in dust and dust contains living microorganisms. Some of these microorganisms actually cause a pulmonary disease called Valley Fever, which is quite common in humans and pets here in the SW deserts.
In addition to the dust, there's pollen, leaves, and who knows what else every time the wind blows being swept into our pools.

Is your CYA level where it should be for a chlorine pool?

I performed and passed OCLT (< .5 loss) last night after about 9 hours, with FC 10.5 at 6 am. FC down to 5 at 8 pm. This is consistent with my daily chlorine use so far this summer.

Seems I may be a good candidate for higher CYA levels of 70 or 80. I will report back on my results.

Yes. I’m somewhere around 60.

I don’t know what to do. Tonight I dumped in 14 cups of 12.5%. Darn near a gallon. Cya is 60. OCLT passes. Bleach strength confirmed; 1 hr after chlorine addition FC level is as predicted. I lose 5-6 per day.

Most of TFP says this is way too high. 3-4 is max normal loss. Some of TFP says yep I hear you Katygreys I lose that much in the summer too.

I’m at a loss. I’ll keep pouring in bleach like it’s going outta style until I bite the bullet and buy a SWG. I’m just terrified that when I do my SWG will have to run at 100% for most of the day every day…or worse I have to supplement with bleach anyway. That would be the ultimate defeat!!!

I am losing CYA. Craziness. Seven days ago I was 60/70. Now I’m definitely 50. Pool temp near 90, reading 88 degF at 8am today. I’ve read the articles/posts about CYA degradation. And I seem to recall a post where someone on TFP sticks up on CYA every year because he/she/they/them/it go through it rapidly, apparently like I am about to…

Is there something about my pool, some characteristic, that contributes to CYA loss. I’m adding lottts of water due to evaporation and ZERO rain here in Houston for weeks. I have no auto drain…

Elevated water temperatures (90F or thereabouts) accelerates the CYA loss. I can lose 15 ppm a month during the summer.

I think I need to devise a more elegant solution to CYA additions if I’m going to be doing it but-weekly. Current setup is pantyhose anchored to 3’ 4x4…

I think I need to devise a more elegant solution to CYA additions
I had a hard time getting CYA to dissolve when using the sock method so I now add CYA to a bucket of hot water and stir it with a wooden paint stick quite a few times. Still takes several hours to dissolve but once it does, I slowly pour it in around the returns.

I wouldn't go hog-wild on the additions, cause you don't want it to build-up either. High CYA means you will need even more LC.
I would add enough to get to 60, then wait till it drops to 40 and re-add.

I’m losing 6 ppm per day. CYA is 60. Adding bleach at night to get to 11ppm; test next night, I’m at 5 ppm. Confirming I actually get to 11 after adding, so bleach is not weak. OCLT passes.

Consensus seems to be loss of 3-4 per day is normal. Can anyone in similar climate with zero shade confirm if 6 is normal?

Second question: It’s barely June. If losing 6 is indeed normal, I’ll likely lose more in July/August. Can a Hayward T-15 in my 18000 gal pool realistically keep up. Pool math says run it at 100% for 20 hrs to get 8ppm.

Please help. I posted in another thread but didn’t get much response. I’m going thru a lot of bleach per day. At this rate my bleach bill will be $130/month (a gallon a day at $4.20/gal of 12.5%).
Have you cleaned the filter? Eliminating any organic matter in the system should help.

Reading another post got me thinking, Is stagnant water I rarely used pipes contributing to FC loss (although OCLT passes).

I am not running my spa at all now. I never run the blower. And I rarely run the waterfall. Could stagnant water in these pipes be harboring algae? Should I run these daily?

Does this even make sense? I thought algae needed sunlight for photosynthesis. These pipes certainly don’t get much of any light…
