Replacing Skimmer Weir - Weird pieces

Hey,

One of my skimmer weirs has been an issue for a few years, it keeps falling out. I tried to replace it, but even though the replacement looks the same as what came out, it doesn't look like it will go in properly. I can't get a good picture, it's an old Anthony and Sylvan pool, if that helps.

It seems like in the skimmer where I would expect two holes the size of the end of the axle part of the weir, on one side there's sort of a hole, but it seems too small (maybe got some plaster in it from the new plaster and lazy workers if the weird had come out?) and the other side has a small piece sticking out into the skimmer weird space, instead of a hole.

Is there a different kind of weir that I need? I think what I bought was 8 inches, and it seems like about the right size, but I'm not 100% on that part even. I thought this would be simpler than it has turned out to be (story of pools I suppose).

I can try to get my underwater camera and get a picture if that would help.

Also, which way should weirs face? It seems obvious but I'm not 100% sure.

Thanks.

Not sure about your particular skimmer hole issue but all weir doors should fall inwards when the pump is on so debris will flow into the skimmer & then float up & close off the skimmer box hole when the pump is off preventing any debris inside the skimmer from flowing back into the pool (there’s usually some styrofoam on the backside of the weir door to facilitate this ) there should be some sort of stop to prevent it from flopping forward into the pool.

Thanks, yeah, I understand which way it falls, but does it matter which face faces the pool? The doors I bought don't have an obvious front and back.

I guess not unless there’s a stop on the door or foam. The stop would go towards the pool & the foam would go towards the skimmer.

Looking at another thread (Hayward skimmer weir question?) this is a maybe a Pentair Admiral S20 (Admiral S15 and S20 Skimmers).

Except with one pin broken off. The replacement weir (https://www.amazon.com/Skimmer-Replacement-Pentair-85001500-Admiral/dp/B003UNWVN8) would probably work if I had both pins, but I don't. So I'm not sure what my options are at this point.

Ugh.

Not sure if I can dig out that plaster on the one side and maybe I can find a replacement pin, although it isn't listed on their parts list I guess because it's supposed to just be molded to the skimmer body.

They make universal replacement ones with pins on the door itself and they hold themselves in place. I'm not sure if you need to break your pins off or simply move the door back an inch or two. I searched for spring loaded weir door and this was one of many. Universal weir door probably gets good hits too. Read the description well and find your right size.

I have two of those I bought, 8 inches. My concern is that I thought those fit into little holes in the side of the skimmer, are they just supposed to be pressure fit? So break off the one pin and put the door to the basket side of the old pin pieces/holes?

The universal ones are pressure fit. The specific replacement ones reuse your pins or holes.

That's what I'm unsure of. And you would need to confirm you have the right door that is pressure fit before doing so, if that's the right call.

Can you buy the pin and glue a new one in place ? There is a seam on the base of the good pin suggesting that it's 2 pieces. One of those pieces is the skimmer itself.

Buying the pin certainly seems to be the most official fix, but I don't see it in any part diagrams so I'm not sure how to order it. I sent the pictures to inyo, so maybe they have an idea.

I wouldn't break off the existing pin - it may cause a hole and skimmer leak. Position the spring loaded door "just" behind the existing pin.

I think the original pins are moulded into the skimmer during manufacter.

Gettijg some of that plaster/grout off near the pins and on the bottom of the skimmer opening may also help the new door move freely.

Behind meaning towards the basket, correct?

The old door that came out I think was spring loaded, just the spring broke I guess so it didn't have tension. So clearly that's what somebody did in the past at least once.

This is also the most reversible fix. Just clean up some grout and put a spring loaded in, and if it doesn't work all I wasted was a few bucks on the door.

Yes, behind as in furthest from the pool, toward the skimmer basket.

Just be sure to line up the new weir door exactly where you want it before pulling the spring retaining pins.

A small putty knife may help in removing the plaster/grout in those areas.

So I just tried to remove that stuff where the pin is missing, but it's not grout or plaster. It feels like silicone or maybe the two part putty. I think you're right that removing the pin might make it leak, and that happened in the past and was patched. So I think that's all patch and I don't really want to remove it.

Ok, then leave it and try a spring loaded replacement weir door.
If you have the original door, take it with you or measure it so you get the most correct sized replacement.

Could you buy one of the replacement doors, use that to determine what diameter the pin should be, then buy a section of plastic rod (McMaster-Carr) and cut to the right length to serve as the pin and use 2 part epoxy to attach the "pin" where it is supposed to be?
