Is this normal chlorine usage?

Don't forget to adjust your target FC with rising CYA. If CYA is 50 now and SWG still off, then you want to target FC 6-8ppm and not have it fall below 4ppm. As soon as you drop below 4ppm you risk algae which you want to avoid especially with fresh plaster.

Is your chlorine fresh? Have you verified by testing about 30min after adding chlorine with the pump running, that the addition increased your FC by the expected amount?

Clorine in less than a couple months old. I have checked levels after adding and typically close to expected value. But when I get a high loss it will drop below 4 for some period of time. Today over 12 hours I lost 6ppm and level got to 2ppm not sure how long was below 4.

6ppm is a lot. Is the pool being used? Any chance that kids left something behind in the pool that would explain higher chlorine demand?

Pool is being used but lightly 1 ish hr/day by 1-2 people. I just checked OCLT and it was 1 ppm went from 7 to 6 and less then .5cc present. I am thinking I shouod Slam to be on the safe side.

That seems prudent! Check for hidden algae somewhere. Maybe it's hiding out in a light or skimmer throat/weir door/foam behind weir door or main drain or something similar and that's what's eating your FC.

It's a light rain and working from home so thought a good time. I just added 2 gallons of LC and did a brush of the pool. I have not looked too closely at the skimmer until this morning. I found some grime on the water line as well in a hole in the bottom of the skimer. I'm not sure what this one is used for but there's no water flow through it and just seems to collect grime?

Anyone know what this other hole in the skimmer is for?

Thanks

Some people have their main drains plumbed direct to their skimmer, so the housing for most skimmers have two ports on the bottom. If it's not used and plugged, then if you have a main drain, the main drain is likely plumbed directly to the pad instead of going through the skimmer.

You could use a shop-vac to clear out what's in there and maybe just make sure it's not harboring algae, but I don't think that would be much of a culprit. You could always scrub it out with an old toothbrush to be sure, though.

How about the back of the weir door? Do you have any lights in the pool? If they're the type with a niche behind, then it's mean to get the pool's water in them and it can be a haven for algae too. Any ladders? Basically look at anything that's in the pool that you can't easily see and scrub but could have indirect sunlight getting to it.

I cleaned out the hole is there a good way yo block this off so it doesn't collect gunk.....
I do have 4 globrites (installed into 1.5in pipe) and 2 intellibrites lights I scrubbed the outside not sure how to get behind either of them.

I don't think those let light behind them so no biggie there. It's the large, 12" or so diameter lights with a ring around them and a screw at the top going toward the pool wall that have niches.

Is that port threaded? If so, you could put in a cleanout plug or something similar.

Could you take some photos of the pool and equipment from different angles to share? Maybe we can spot something. In your first post I saw what looks to be drains in the bottom - might need a way to take the cover off those and clean those out too.

I don't really have to much special. No ladders or slides or other things going into the pool. Started the slam this morning at around 22ppm was good until the sun came out at noon and just ate through the clorine like mad would go from low 20's to 15 ever few hours. After sun went down holding steady at 22. Will see what it looks like in AM.

FC was 21.5 and CC was less than 0.5 just as the sun was starting to hit the pool thank you 5AM sunrises.... Thinking if there was anything in pool would be dead now?

Sounds like you caught it early enough to get it under control quickly. I'd suggest to let FC come down slowly, but target a bit higher than before. Make sure you have enough buffer to not drop too low again.

How much longer until you can start the SWG?

I am just waiting for the PB to install it he was supposed to do it yesterday but canceled the install do to rain..... Rescheduled to Monday cant happen soon enough (fingers crossed). I plan to shoot for 9-10 FC instead of the 6-8 i was targeting before just to be on the safe side. I get a good 12-13 hrs on sun on the pool. Picked up some more Chlorine just in case its delayed again.

Now back to the fun stuff like trying to figure out how to program the automation using Screenlogic :)

Thanks for all the input/help.
