Wanda the Whale makes pump lose prime

I’m having one issue after another this year. Wanda seems to be making the pump lose prime. She’ll still work, but the water isn’t hitting the top of the strainer lid on the pump. I’ve replaced her hose & still the same issue. The suction works fine with just the hose, but as soon as I connect it to Wanda, it slows down. I’ve shaken all the air out of her and everything. Anyone else ever run into this?

Have u tried lubing the oring on the pump basket lid? Also check for other suction side leaks - it’s possible that the pressure she creates forces the other leaks to suck more air when normally they would go unnoticed.

Yes, the o ring is actually new. No suction side leaks, it’s all hard plumbed. It’s weird bc it’s only when I connect her. As long as it’s just the hose connected, vacuum & suction is perfect.

My kreepy krauly/ mamba cleaner was always like that so I switched to a pressure side intex cleaner that I already had because I just couldn’t trust it not to cavitate the pump. Were u using Wanda successfully before? If so perhaps she has something going on inside? Not really sure of the inner workings of those but I know some folks have to replace them periodically due to failure. Here’s the manual for it incase you no longer have it
Maybe @zea3 has some ideas 💡

Yes, this is actually my second Wanda. I got her last year and she worked perfectly. My other one had lost a couple shoes and something else happened, can’t recall so I just bought a new one thinking I may be able to use the old one for parts if needed.

How high is the water level inside the pool? Do you have a skimmer installed? Also maybe try wrapping the hose joints with rubberized tape to make sure there is no air getting sucked in.

Water level is fine. No skimmer. I may try to wrap the joints with Teflon. It drives me insane bc I can use the hose alone and it doesn’t affect the pressure at all. But as soon as I hook Wanda up, pressure drops.

No suction side leak? Air is getting in somewhere. Either in the plumbing or in the wanda hose.
No leaks. I can use the hose without Wanda just fine, but as soon as I hook her up, pressure is lost. I just don’t see how she could be causing it since she’s on the floor of the pool. I may call Hayward bc I’m kinda frustrated. I just bought her last year and she was my second one.
