Pool light sealing ring replacement

So I have a pool light that the sealing ring on the niche has corroded away. I had a leak in the pool and the guy indicated I have a leak at the niche seal and recommended replacing the ring and gasket. I am wondering the best way to do this? I am a couple years out from a new liner.
I have a few questions
1) do I have to drain the pool to below the light location or can I do it with the pool filled? (I saw some threads where people recommended waiting till a new liner install to address but in my case I have a leak
2) there is some remaining gasket residue on the liner. What is the best way to remove this residue to get a good seal with the new gasket. I am wanting to clean it up without damaging the liner.
3) any specific instructions to making the new instal I should be aware of?

Attached are pictures. I have deduced that I need a pentair 79200200 10 hole standard liner sealing replacement And I have initial installation instructions. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I am thinking to drain the pool to below the light level and then replace the gasket and sealing ring. Considering I have leaking and am not due for liner replacement for a while, I think this is the best option! Is this safe or should I be concerned about this operation?

Did you ever come to a resolution on replacing the sealing ring? I have a similar situation and there is little information out there on sealing ring replacement while keeping the current liner.

Not yet! I came back today from a week long vacation and the water level was at the skimmer level and I was drawing some air into the pump. Hoping it didn’t dry run and damage the pump. I had a leak detection guy out and he used a microphone and said it was around the niche. I’m assuming it is because my sealing ring is gone and doesn’t have the top gasket either.

I asked on some Facebook groups and they said I had to drain the pool to below the level of the light and that in order to resolve, I would have to remove the light housing. To do that I would have to unplug the light Wire and fish it through. Kinda nervous to do that though. There is some inherent risk for sure.
I am goi g to get some dye tomorrow amd see if I can verify it is at the sealing ring or if it is at the back of the niche. I’m guessing sealingnring but not certain. Have you had any luck?

I am going to order a block off disc from frankwall.com. My niche is cracked at the front flange about one third of the way around. The people at Frank Wall tell me it can be done with or without draining below the light. I just had a new liner put in and I called the installer and asked for advice. His concern is the liner may slip in either case. You can see my pool in my avatar. No way can anyone cut into the deck to replace the niche and get it back to match; also it is difficult to find those bull nose bricks for the coping. If the liner does slip after removing the ring I still think it would be possible to completely drain the pool to realign the liner. If not the most economical repair would be to replace the liner.
I have heard instead of pulling the light cord and fixture of removing the outside ring from the light fixture to be able to pull the fixture through the sealing ring and then put the new sealing ring on. The drawback is that may disturb the seal on the light and cause it to leak water.
Researching leaking light niches shows this is a problem that a lot of vinyl pool owners deal with. I'm surprised there is not more information concerning sealing ring replacement.
Thanks for replying.
