Best Filter for 20,000 gallon in ground pool?

We are looking to replace our purex triton 2000 DE filter purchased in October 1999. We have had issues with green algae on the walls of the pool - chemicals are in line but we started to see DE shooting back into the pool. We have replaced the grids and just about everything on the filter we can with no success. Looking for suggestions on what filter to purchase as a replacement. Our pool is about 20,000 gallons, pebble tec, 6ft waterfall. We have 2 pumps ~ purex whisperflo 2 hp. Appreciate any suggestions. 🙂

It is impossible to have your "Chemicals" in line and have algae..

Filters have nothing to do with keeping you from getting algae. Algae is a chemical issue, and not a filter or mechanical issue..

Our rule of thumb is that the bigger the filter, the less often you have to clean it. This assumes that you do not have algae, as any filter will quickly clog if algae is present.

I suggest that you read through our Pool School and see what we are all about.. I would start with ... ABCs of Pool Water Chemistry

I have a cartridge filter and love them. As far as sizing goes get the biggest one you can afford and have room for. Mine is a Hayward but they are very basic so vendor is up to you.
My 1st cartridge filter i sized to the pool and after a few seasons removed it and went big :)
Cartridge keeps the water clear and not hard to clean

I agree with Jim, if you have algae that’s another issue.

Thanks. I will check chemicals again tomorrow after reading that information.

You will find that our chemical standards are not at all what pool stores use... The main thing to keep in mind is that your Chlorine (FC) must be keep in a relationship with your CYA (Stabilizer) level... See this chart... FC/CYA Levels

I have three pools.. Two old pools with DE filters, and a newer one at my house which has a large cartridge filter.. I can hardly wait for the DE filters to die so I can replace them with cartridge filters.. That said, I have never had an algae bloom in the combined 25 years of pool operation... If you are prone to getting algae, cartridge filters are harder to clean, as you have to open them, to clean them.. I clean my filter twice a year...

We have never had an algae problem. For 22 years our pool was crystal clear. We started noticing it the week after we started doing our pool ourselves. Our pool guy left tablets in a dispenser and vacuumed the pool then left. He cleaned the filter with my husband and we noticed DE going back into the pool. We bought 8 new grids - a few of the old ones had small tears- and the DE still came back into the pool. We replaced o rings and checked the manifold. We took our water to be tested by a local pool company and they said we had way too much CYA. After reading up on it, we decided to drain the pool and start over. Now we have greenish brown algae when my husband brushes the pool ~ which he does almost daily right now. The water looks clear until he brushes it. We decided to take the filter apart again and look at pieces that sit below the tank. We didn’t want to pull the piece out that directs the water so we put it back together and water leaked out everywhere from the bottom. We pulled the tank off again and the compression ring has a place where the metal deteriorated and I think the water is coming out because it can‘t seal with that gap. We went on line to buy a new compression ring and O ring but it is another $70 and we have put so much money into it over the last 4 months that we figured it is time to buy a new filter. My husband added extra chlorine yesterday because of the algae but I will check the chemicals as outlined on this site and have Leslie’s check so I can get a CYA level. Thank you so much!

Sounds like your taking your service over which is smart. But please get a test kit, pool store test aren’t all over the board.
We have all relied on pool stores and ended up spending a ton of money :)

Worse case let them test but don’t fall for the “ you just need to add these things “ “$150 please

trouble free pools sells a great kit and is actually cheaper but I have the Taylor 2006.
