Can I break up solidified R0870 powder?

Hi all, new to TFP and on day 4 of my first SLAM.

I bought a TF-100 kit from tftestkits to keep up with the chemistry, and it's been working pretty well so far (assuming I'm measuring everything correctly).

My R0870 powder is a question though, probably 2/3 of it is like solidified rock - it was like that when I received the kit. I'm not able to scrape it loose with the included measuring spoon, and will probably have to take either a knife or something more solid to it to break it apart.

I'm quickly running out of the loose section of my powder, so I need to verify if I can break apart the solidified portion safely & if it will keep its effectiveness. I can attach a photo later today if that would be beneficial.

Thanks! I've spent a fair bit of time on this site recently trying to get a handle on my pool (new home purchase). The information here is invaluable!

When that happens to me, I use the tip of my pocket knife, or a stainless deck screw to scrape it back into powder.
As long the powder is white, it is good to use.

The powder is very susceptible to clumping when exposed to humidity. Even if it has turned grey it should still work. Next time you buy something with one of those little desiccant packets you may want to toss it in the test kit box.

good to know, the same thing happened to me. I just bought some fresh reagents from TF Test Kits and the R0870 was solid. At first I thought there was a protective paper seal thing on it that you have to peel off - what you see in the picture is my thumb hole from trying to pull of an non-exist seal! Beneath that it was all clumped. I broke it up as best I could without spilling it but I was wondering if it was still good.

If you received it as clumps, then I would question the storage process at TFTESTKIT. I purchased some directly from Taylor (was buying some other things so I added the powder) and it came well packaged and all powder, no clumps.

Can you please email Rebecca at [email protected] so she can further assist. I’m sure she’ll be happy to completely address the issue but for privacy issues we’d like to fix things off the public forum. 👍
