Antifreeze and pool chemistry

Hi there.... how much do you think you got in the pool? Was it RV antifreeze?

It will break down over time with generous amounts of chlorine. Monitor your FC level daily and maintain it as appropriate for your CYA level and over time it should be gone.

I didn't see any changes. Negligible at most. Of course, only trace amounts get into my pool water. In the fall, I drained my sand filter, then poured a gallon or two of antifreeze over the top of the sand and let that drain out as well. The idea was to displace the water, not fill the filter.

I had the pool installer do the closing and opening (big mistake). They put 70 gallons of antifreeze in the lines and then just pumped it all into the pool when opening. My FC went from 35 to 0 in matter of 4 days.

So you’re going to need to SLAM your pool and see what CC levels you get. Pool/RV antifreeze is NOT benign in its reactions with chlorine. It can form high levels of chloroform which can make a person feel very sick. 70 gallons in a 7,000 gallon pool is a ridiculous amount of antifreeze. That’s 1% of your pool volume.

SLAM and measure CCs. Unfortunately chloroform does not show up on the CCs test so you’re going to have to rely on the SLAM and then test the waters yourself. I would limit swimming at first to no more than 10mins to see if you feel any ill effects.

Never use that pool service again, they are careless.

A 2" pipe 100 feet long will hold 16.3 gallons.

70 gallons would completely fill (4) 2" pipes at 100 feet per pipe.

That's complete nonsense.

Once you blow out the lines, you really don't much antifreeze anywhere.

It's either a typo or they lied. There's no way they used 70 gallons. That's (17) 4 gallon cases.

You don't need 7 gallons much less 70 gallons.

How much did they charge for 70 gallons of antifreeze?

I doubt that they really added 70 gallons.

That's just stupid.

Call them and ask to speak to the person who closed your pool and ask them where they added 70 gallons and why.

What are all of the chemistry readings now?

You probably need to SLAM.

I slammed yesterday as my FC went to 0, my pool got cloudy. So I tested everything yesterday and raised my pH and added liquid chlorine and turned swg to 100%. Ill retest when I get home from work today. I asked them why they needed so much antifreeze and the response was that it was precautionary as they've had issues with pipes breaking and dealing with upset customers, so I think they do it for CYA (cover your a**) scenario. Only reason I used them was because it was free. Won't do it again, that I can guarantee.

This is sounding like some sort of fleece. Thankfully you didn't pay for it, but that stuff costs about $4 a gallon at Walmart. If they are charging clients for 70 gallons of antifreeze then they are raking in over $300 and either just dumping that much in to the pool to do nothing but making opening harder or (more likely) only using what's necessary and pocketing the rest. There is no CYA scenario in which this is acceptable and depending on the actual conduct they might be doing something outright illegal.

What you describe is not a SLAM. I’d recommend reading up on the SLAM Process.

It’s not a “one and done” activity — and it’s not done until you pass an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test.

They charge $9.49 a gallon.
