Hot tub scum sponge

When my hot tub arrived it came with a white scum sponge that I'm supposed to leave in the hot tub to suck up oils and scum. Then once it gets all nasty throw it away and put in a new one. I wasn't going to buy another but I figured I'd keep it in the tub and see if it does anything.

I haven't seen too much info on here regarding these scum sponges but is there any benefit for those of us using the methods of spa chemistry/sanitizing as espoused on here? I've had my tub for a couple months now and the sponge is just as clean as the first day so I'm thinking I'll just throw it out and not worry about it. Is this because the FC is eating all the contaminants? Anyone have any insight? Our hot tub has seen heavy use with my family and 3 yr old but I've been religiously keeping the FC in the necessary ranges with bleach additions after use and a SWG.

I use one - the scum bug - all the other ones i have tried disintegrated

I just use it to catch any “sheen” while in the tub from lotions, soaps, oily skin etc. & prevent it from going in my filter. It also serves a secondary purpose for me to be able to squeeze a little water over my feet before entering as my spa is outdoors & there’s always something on my steps or between the spa & the pool. Mine never looks dirty but i think it does help keep the filter a little cleaner. I let it float while I’m soaking & squeeze it out outside of the tub then rinse it a little before sitting it on the ledge when exiting. In the summer i also use one in the pool for sunscreen sheen prevention.
 
I throw it in but it always ends up in the skimmer where it seems to collect a decent amount of oils. Mostly use it when there’s gonna be alot of sunscreened bodies & I shore my bets with extra chlorine as well for those instances. On a daily basis i try to time my swims with the approaching shade to avoid slathering up so much. The bug also serves as a life raft that helps me collect the evil stinging, flying ant things we get & send them to their death via the skimmer 😁
