And we are off...

On the topic of running extra PVC for future potential use, where are you running it to? I understand one end would be at the equipment pad, but what about the other end?

for me it would be to the far end of the pool, my pool is close to the house and runs out into the yard - so it would give me a 55' head start into the yard if i ever want to run something back there.

PB has 90 bags of pre-mix coming tomorrow for my pool bottom (i decided to go hard bottom instead of sand)- that seems like a lot - the pool is 18x36 rectangle - the charts I am reading online have it closer to 65 bags - he said he would credit me back any unused material.

For me I am thinking that once the pool decking is in place I will have to go all the way around the pool to add anything, so I am adding conduit from both sides of the patio for future use, and adding an extra drain line. They are also going to have to dig in my side yard all the way to the front yard where the gas meter is so I am adding a 3" line in there for possible future use to add additional drainage just in case the pool construction causes drainage issues on that side. And now that I am typing this and thinking about it I think I will add one or two more lines so I can repair all of the sprinklers on the far end of my yard and install a mosquito misting system.

So when you guys say "I am adding" are you just going and laying down your own PVC after the builders leave for the day or having them run the extra lines for you? Just curious...and coming up with ideas of my own. For one thing, I would definitely like to have at the very least an electrical outlet or two next to my patio and on the far side of the pool, which would reside in a flower bed/natural area. Not sure if that's typically something I would ask the PB to do or just have the empty lines run and do the electrical runs myself after.

In my situation I told the builder that while they had the trenches open for the plumbing and electrical I wanted to add a few extra pipes before it is all buried for concrete. You could just pay them to put them in for you, or pay the plumber a few bucks to do it while he is there.

Gotcha - I'm proficient with running PVC myself, just wasn't sure how accommodating most builders were to that sort of thing - I'll be sure to talk to mine more about it when I come up with an idea of what I want to do.

so i actually ran into some practical effects of not having a raceway put in while the chance exists. When they were digging the hole they hit some black irrigation pipe, which i assumed was abandoned, since i don't have a sprinkler system in the back yard. Later in the night I decided to test out my front yard zones and sure enough, the two pipes were actually feeding the two zones of my front yard on the other side of my driveway. Instead of going under the driveway, they went 345 degrees all the way around my house (a couple hundred feet run), to reach an area 15 feet from the sprinkler control box, all because the driveway was in the way. If they had laid a conduit under the driveway in anticipation for the need to access the underside of driveway, I would have much better pressure to those zones, and I would not have almost flooded my open dirt pool hole when I tried watering my grass seed.

Question for our electric informed members: In the far back corner will be a junction box for the pool light - can i run underground feeder cable to power that junction box in a 24" trench, or should I have thhn run through pvc conduit at 18"? Also, it is my understanding that the horizontal run can be within 5 ft of the pool (the electrician said that it can't, but it is my understanding that he is wrong per the 2017 NEC - and the prior NEC allows for horizontal cable to be within 5" if it is feeding the pool equipment).

I do not known electrical code at all, but we have electric outlets about 5ft away from where we are building our new pool and I haven't heard anything about ou it them not being ok. They are all GFCI circuits and have covers, so should be safe.

Thanks. My wife wanted to go farther back but I wanted to preserve the yard (and my excuse to mow) so I tucked the pool close to the house.

So I had to go into the half filled freezing pool to instal the ground jumper to the inside of the wet niche and then encapsulate with potting compound. A hot shower and an hour later and I’m still freezing.
