Wait to do paver coping and decking after pool?

We're slated to start construction in November of an in ground, freeform vinyl liner pool with polymer walls. The plan is to do a paver decking and coping which the PB does not do on his own, we are subbing that out ourselves to the contractor we used for our patio. Would there be any harm - or conversely, any benefit - to allowing some time between completion of the pool and then the installation of the bullnose paver coping and paver decking? Especially since the pool will be completed in November-December (and not heated), I figure giving a few extra weeks or even a month or two for the surrounding backfilled ground to settle couldn't hurt; but I'm not sure of the possible ramifications of leaving the top of the pool walls and vinyl liner track exposed might be either. And of course I worry about rain making an absolute mess of the pool with exposed soil adjacent, but just trying to figure out (a) what is acceptable or (b) what is preferred.
 
Way out of my league, and not really what you're asking, but my first thought (fresh from advising in a thread by a guy that got an awful concrete deck job): are you confident that your patio guy understands the requirements and nuances of creating a deck for a pool? Expansion, draining and slope are some of the things to be aware of. Bonding, too (very important). I'm sure there are other considerations, as well. Has he mentioned any of those things? Just pointing out that a pool deck requires a different skill set than a patio...
 
Any more input or thoughts on this? I've since read a couple of other threads with mention of people finishing and using a pool before coping and decking is added so it doesn't sound like that should be much of a concern, but the more opinions the better!
 
You should be using gravel as backfill and not and dirt that was taken out..

  • 57 stone is about a half inch in size and is used to backfill the side walls of a pool. 57 stone works well locking together for good compaction when it is dropped into the overdig area around the pool. Its 95% compacted out of the bucket. A light hand tamp or plate compactor and you are good.[1]
There have been many who use the pool while waiting for the deck so should be no problem there.. :)
 
I called 3 patio people for estimates and 2 of them refused to touch it for a year. Many times they dont take any care when backfilling and most of your pervious lawn ends up in the hole. It takes the first winter to break down and leave big voids. Factor in any other air pockets or loosely filled dirt too.. The third guy who was a family friend said he would come back and fix any settling. Which was about half the patio, and he came back to fix it as promised. Indoor/outdoor carpet is between 50 cents and $1.50 a foot at HD/Lowes and is a cheap fix to help cut down on the mud if you decide to wait.

But, but but my suggestion was gravel and no dirt, nice clean gravel, I can get a ton for 9 dollars here, delivered is the expense... :) but carpet, grab big shag carpet would be great... he he he

They only had the good indoor/outdoor when I needed it and it was $1k for what I needed. So I bought $500 or so in paver / stepping stones to and from the house, diving board and ladder. I did so planning on using them afterwards as my hot tub area patio so really I just bought them a bit early and used them for the pool first.

Good feedback! I actually did not know about the preference to use gravel, I just assumed the PB's here backfill with excavated soil. I will find out. Even if they do use the soil, I am okay with waiting a bit for it to settle. Not a year mind you, but it's going to be at least 4 months from water fill to swimming time and we get a lot of rain to help with the settling if I need to give it more time. Plus I kinda dig the idea of some outdoor carpet! :LOL:

I assume the gravel suggestion doesn't change based on wall type? We'll have polymer walls, not steel.

Plumbing for future waterfall

I had my PB run plumbing to the far end of our pool for a future waterfeature, however I've noticed the plumbing is not directly on center. Is this going to cause a problem down the line when we go to build our waterfall or is there an easy solution to this?

We did our patio right away......... but the patio guys were booked for 5 weeks and we weren’t waiting to swim so I needed something real short term and the bricks did the trick. Plus they were reusable.
