Pushy relatives

Couldn't find a good place to post this, so posting it here. How do you all handle pushy relatives that think just because you share some DNA, no matter how little, that they are entitled to come over and swim pretty much at their own whim?

Due to COVID I WFH 100% right now. Also, we have a pretty full summer with close relatives coming in from out of town and my daughter having friends over to swim.

So when distant relatives call up and won't take no for an answer, how do you all handle it?

It’s rough for most people in that situation. We always had hardcore boundaries. When we were hosting we were hosting. Didnt matter who or how many. Any other time was off limits. Sure some random get togethers popped up, but for the most part we stick to the rules.

Now is an easier time for you to get out of it because you can blame it on work. You have all those conference calls this week and it has to be dead silent inside and out. Nobody coming back and forth for snacks or bathrooms. Sorry, but work is work. Hehe.

It is hard but do your self a favor and say "Now is not a good time. I will call you when it is a good time." It is a no and tells them the "rule" of YOU calling THEM to INVITE them over. No gray area at all.

Good luck!

This is the perfect year to just say no.

Tonight we were on the receiving end of the phone call. saying it’s not a good idea to come this year. Sucks that our planned vacation is blown, but I totally get it.

By the way, if anyone in the Destin, FL area has 2 free rooms the week of 7/20, let me know. Full ocean view is preferred, but we will settle for partial 🤣

I would think they arent taking no for an answer, because you arent saying no. If you are saying no, and they still arent buying it, an "accident in the pool" is a great answer. No one can swim until the pool has been treated.

Your relatives must be from up north. You know how pushy those yankees are.
Oh, you're in Michigan too, so you know what I mean.

LOL. While we are up north, this is a family full of southern rednecks. Both sides of the family are firmly rooted in the south. One side are from eastern Kentucky (think of the Hatfield and McCoy area). And the other side from northern Alabama.

However, most of them are 1 generation removed from the south, so maybe Yankee sensibilities have crept in.

tell them you had to Shock the pool and it's not safe to swim in for a week

Yeah, the problem is that it just punts the problem a week down the line. When I mean pushy, I mean pushy. And these folks have nothing else to do. Long story, but part of the issue is that sit in the subarban, 1000 sq ft home and watch TV all day. So they have plenty of time on their hands. Luckily we live almost an hour away or it would be worse.

If they won't understand the civil "no" then you will have to resort to chemical warfare....

You have learned a lot here about how to maintain your pool to make it the most wonderful experience for your swimmers. By the same token you know how to make it the most undesirable experience ;) ;) . With a few tweaks to your pools chem you can send them home with stingy eye's, green hair, eczema and dissolving bathing suits. They will never comeback again... (I'm joking you know, I hope)
