Hello everyone - I posted a couple of months ago when I was starting to meet with pool builders and have finally identified a builder that I really like. We have 3 young kids (7,4,1) so wanted a large tanning ledge but still enough area for them to swim and enjoy as they get older. We also have a large patio that we are having topped to match the deck and based on comments here, we are getting as much deck as we can fit within our budget.

Equipment is as follows:
  • Pump - Pentair IntelliFlo 3050 3HP/VS/SVRS
  • Filter type - Pentair 60 sq. ft. DE filter
  • Heater - 400K BTU Pentair (NG)
  • Controller - EasyTouch 4 - Pool/Spa (base system)
  • Interface - ScreenLogic Interface Kit (Wireless)
  • Sanitation - Pentair Rainbow 320 Inline Chlorinator
  • Booster pump - 1-Pentair IntelliFloXF VSF 3HP
  • Addt'l Heater - Aquacal Autopilot Heat/Cool Pump
  • Cleaning System - 3/4 booster pump (I've declined the included cleaner as I want to get a Polaris Quattro Sport)

A few things to consider:
1) 12 inch depth on tanning ledge will make for a deep step into the pool when you add several more inches for top of waterline tile and coping. Given young kids (and older knees!), maybe consider a mini step. We added that and are glad we did. Our tanning ledge is 9 inches deep I think.
2) I don't see water depths, but we put in a bi-level step out of our deep end, and the kids use it all the time to do the jump in, get out and repeat without having to get to shallower water (or drip all over those relaxing on the tanning ledge!). I'll attach pictures so you see what I mean.
3) You'll hear soon from others recommending a salt water chlorine generator instead of the inline chlorinator. So glad we took the advice given on this site and got the SWCG!

I like that your booster pump is variable speed...I wish we had thought of that. Since we don't close pools around here but still have freezing weather, 'freeze protection' makes that booster pump run the water features for a lot of hours. Our single speed is so loud and not energy efficient in this scenario.

Thanks for the feedback. I think we are going to do the tanning ledge so that the water is 9 inches deep. We are having a hard time deciding on pool depth, but are currently thinking of doing 4-5-4. Builder had recommended 6’ in the middle but that seems like an awkward depth.

As far as salt, its the typical Dallas/Texas reaction from the builders that salt is extremely corrosive especially for travertine decking. However, based on comments here I’m seriously considering going salt.

@Jimrahbe - would you recommend staying with easy touch or requesting intellicenter instead?

I would go with the IntelliCenter only because it is new and the F/W can be updated just like on your PC.. That said, I have three EasyTouch systems and they all work just fine. It really depends on the kind of guy you are.. If you like to play with these things, then the IntelliCenter will give you more options.. If you tend to be the kind of guy that lets the pool builder set it up, then the EasyTouch is all you need.

Let me put it another way... the difference between the IntelliCenter and the EasyTouch is not enough for me to spend the money to upgrade.. But.. if I were to build another new pool, I would add the IntelliCenter.

I just saw a huge mistake!!! Never, ever buy a pump with the SVRS option.. I have three IntelliFlo pumps.. One of them came with the pool at my house and I was told the SVRS was required. Well... it is not, and it has been a nightmare since it has been installed.. It will go into the entrapment mode if there is any surge in the system.. Even just shutting off the filter air vent valve too quickly will shut it off.. I recommend you do whatever is needed to get a standard IntelliFlo without the SVRS...

Thanks Jim - I meant to ask about the SVRS option. The builder says it’s for safety but I was under the impression that the drains are all designed currently to prevent someone from being stuck and that needing this built into the pump isn’t necessary.

I do have a tendency to tinker with things so I may very well go with the IntelliCenter.

I am not sure they even make them any more.. I suspect it is old stock... Having two main drains eliminates the safety issue...

Even if you don't trust me on anything else, please trust me on not wanting the SVRS option..
