Pool Just Opened - A Few Q’s

Keep adding chlorine. Be sure your VS pump is at 3000 rpm at least.

Does the water stink? Have you tested CC?

The pump is at 2800 but can turn it up to 3000 or higher if that would be good.
The water doesn't really stink of chlorine. The chlorine itself doesn't smell as much as I remember it but we're told that it's fresh. The CC is at 4.0.
I also confirmed that the 27k gal estimate should be pretty close.

2800 is fine.

After the next test, if still below 5, brush the pool really well and then test again.

Brushed hard and tested again. FC dropped to 1. Added another 2.5 gals of chlorine which is all we have left until we restock in the morning.
We have a tree that started dropping a lot of debris today which may not be helping. We’re trying to keep the pool is clean as we can though.

Just skimmed back, I may have you confused with others. You should be in SLAM, not fighting ammonia, right?

Yes, we are still on SLAM. No ammonia issues that I’m aware of.
Not sure if we need to do something different to get to 10 ppm chlorine, if that comment was intended for me.
I remember last year we needed to do a big blast of chlorine at one point and am wondering if that will be needed again since things seem to be headed in the wrong direction.

You showed a cya of 40. So start adding to 16ppm and test every couple hours and add back.

Started the day at FC of 1.5 but it went up to 9.5 by the second test and has now been hanging around 11. The CC has been zero but was back to .5 just now. We’ve using CYA of 30 (targeting FC of 12 for the SLAM) since that’s around what it’s been other than that one test. The pool is definitely starting to clear. ?

We just successfully completed the OCLT. FC was at 12 last night, and was still at 12 this morning. CC held at .5. The water is crystal clear. Can we consider the SLAM complete?
Do we need to let the FC drift down to normal levels before using the pool? Assume we also need to test pH and TA again when we can.
We're hoping to turn the heater on tomorrow or Wed. and be ready to swim later in the week if possible. The next few days are supposed to be pretty cool (lows at night in the high 30's to mid 40's) so we have a few days to work with anyway.
Thanks.

Sounds like you finished the SLAM! Good job!
As you say the water is cold but it can be swam in now. SLAM level FC is safe to swim in.

Once your FC goes to 10 ppm (later today I suspect) test pH and TA. Also maintain FC in target range based on the FC/CYA Levels

As you suspected, the FC dropped to 8 by yesterday afternoon. We then measured the pH at 7.1 and the TA at 50. We are picking up some Borax to raise the pH and have some baking soda to raise the TA.
Is it okay to turn on the heat pump now, or should we wait to get those levels right?
Can we just sprinkle the Borax and baking soda by the return in the deep end?

Up to you but no real need to add borax or baking soda. See what happens over time. Not sure of your fill water but if it has higher TA and will be added to the pool, the TA will rise.
You can run the heat pump.
