The pleats are so tight, and the stuff caught inside was so small, it wasn't coming out with a simple rinse. I blasted it from both sides with the hose, and ran it under the kitchen sink, and the only way to get the stuff out was to hold each pleat open with my thumbs under the running water. It was a nightmare.

I am in GA and I tried without the inner screen and I had stuff stuck in their also. They are small and rough so water won't wash them out.
Needless to say I only did that one time
I may buy spring filters and save the pleated ones for pollen season

The pleats are fibrous so small insects and plant material with rough exteriors get trapped deep inside the pleats and tangled in the fine fibers. Most of this stays inside the mesh basket, so problem solved. If this is not your experience then no need to use the mesh.

I agree with @elmorage and @markayash. The small stuff gets stuck in between the pleats and takes a lot of hosing to remove. I wish Margaret at Marina hadn't talked me out of the insert mod.

I don’t even take it apart. Since the normal water flow is from inside out, you can back flush the filters while still in the frame quite easily.

Thanks. I think what I will do for now is run the robot with just the pleated for a while and see how difficult it is to clean. I've only used the pleated once so far. I suspect the pleated will come in handy once the summer monsoon dust storms roll in.

Does anyone clean the treads or brushes? I have had the active 20 for about 2 weeks now, and the raised lines on the treads and the ends of all the brush squares are dirty. Just turning blackish but it doesn't easily rub off with your fingers.
Maybe you need to brush and manually vacuum the pool thoroughly before you start using the Active 20 robot. These robots are more of a maintenance item, not a replacement for cleaning. I still brush once every week or so. Do you get this same black substance on your finger if rub it against the liner?

Unless it’s build up I would leave it alone.
Mine first task was spring clean up and other then emptying it every 30 minutes for the first few runs it did great and looks brand new still.

Recently joined the club and bought a Pentair Warrior SE from Marina pool and Spa (great service from them). It's first use was the initial spring cleanup of all the pine needles leaves and other junk from winter. It's done a pretty good job but after 3 30 min cycles (stopped to clean basket) and 5 full 2 hour cycles there is still a bunch of dirt on floor. Are my expectations that it would have gotten everything after 8 runs too high?

So I inherited a 1980s TigerShark QC when I bought my house. The owners left that cleaner for me. After repairing it and running it for three years it finally kicked the bucket. To buy a new motor for it is redonkulous.

It's not unusual. As it passes an area some stuff is scuked up and some it moved to the sides of the cleaner. I don't have that robot (Doheny's Discover here) but I probably ran mine 15 times before it was really clean. I ran it for the 2 hrs in the am and then when I got home from work I hosed out the basked and ran it another 2 hours (repeated next day always starting with a clean basked). My solid tarp cover moved and some leaves got in so it could have been cleaner. But even with nothing visible on the floor it will get fine debris for a bunch of runs. I get a lot of worms that i can't see from the surface and i'm always surprised (guess i shouldn't be). If you have a loop-loc type cover there can be a lot of debris expected. I worked for a pool company and even pools that didn't have trees right near the pool had fine debris with those covers.
I have the SE and my pool floor is spotless after 2 hours. Check and make sure the filters are clean and in place and also make sure the bottom suction valve ( for lack of a better name ) isn't clogged up. I have had a few times where big sticks stop it up

Alright that's reassuring, was a little worried something might be broken. My winter cover is a fairly small hole mesh (not sure brand) and we did dump a bunch of pine needs accidentally while removing it. I'll keep at it, I can still see a lot but it's probably picking up more than I'm seeing as well. The rough filter is always fairly coated in decomposed stuff/sand so it may be pushing more around towards end of cycle.
I hose out both rough and fine filters and bottom of basket after every cycle. I also hose entire robot down inside and out before I bring it in for the night. Only place I haven't checked is the impeller, maybe i'll take that cover off and check there too. End of cycle there are some large leaves usually caught in the felt/cloth at bottom of basket but not sure they're completely stopping stuff. I have noticed some stuff trying to "escape" out the edges between plastic panels, mostly small stuff so it maybe be smaller than gaps around filters. Think that might be hurting it's ability to pick stuff up?
Attached some pictures for reference. Apparently never took a before picture right after opening. The second picture looks far more green than it did in person (but I do/did have an algae problem)

Its pretty easy to get to, mine did have pine straw in it once and kept it from climbing the wall.
