Swamp Fever

I did use step two. I reassembled and recharged the filter with DE, but I didn't test today. It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow. I set the pump up to run its regular program, and hopefully when I'm working from home Tuesday and the weather is clear, I'll see a difference. I still have a lot of Crud in the pool, as vacuuming doesn't take long to fill the skimmer basket and using the leaf rake I'm still getting a lot of Crud. As for what itchyballs are...https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Sweetgum_tree_seed_pods.jpg

I am not an expert, but I do have experience in dealing with your exact problem. I know you said it will be raining for a while and you will not be able to work on the pool. Do yourself a favor and read, read, and then read some more of the post related to your problem. You will learn more than you ever thought possible. Believe me...because like I said I have been there...actually I am only a few weeks from completing a clean up much like yours... You can see my thread titled "Extreme learning curve Please HELP!!!" in the Swimming Pool Start-up and Closing section. My process was long and drawn out but it worked in the end.. I can tell you that the SLAM process works. If you follow the advice of the experts here, and use the number one best, and hardest tool here for me to use....Patience! I too was like you, and had a pool that had not been used in a couple years. My process would have been faster if I would have changed the sand in my filter from the get go. I have no idea what chemicals the previous owners of my house used in the pool, but it totally ruined the filtering ability of the sand in my filter. Like I said... if you have the time see my thread. I think it is very similar to your problem, and you can save some time on waiting for responses to questions that have already been answered. I have included a picture of what my pool looks like now, and yours can too if you follow the suggestions, and advice you get from the people here and stay away from the pool store....Good luck, and like I said before if you use patience, and the great knowledge of the people at TFP you will not need the luck.

You have a DE filter, right? Personally I would spend more time and effort at this point in scooping out debris. Any chlorine youy put in there now is just going to be trying to break down those solids and be wasted on the green algae. SO the more of that you get out the faster it will go.

Such a shame you wasted money on that pool store magic. No more, please. All you need immediately is a GOOD test kit and liquid chlorine. Everythinng else you add now is either a waste of cash or going to cause you other problems.

We had one of those trees growing up! The neighbor kid and I would climb up into the tree and throw the balls at people/cars. The best part was that the neighbor's younger brother couldnt climb the tree so he would run around underneath the tree and take the blame for our shenanigans.

BTW - In Texas we called them Sweet Gum trees, but I like the term itchyballs :)

I can see how those would cause havoc on your vacuum. Thanks for bringing back the memories and good luck with your pool.

Oh, a sweetgum tree near my pool would not be long for this world. I have a fruitless sweetgum in the front yard. Better selection, though not as colorful in fall.

Agree heartily with Maddie - attack debris mightily and dose with chlorine.

Liquid chlorine will be impossible to get at this time.
Congratulations on the new addition to the family. Hope everyone is good. I live in Howell which is not too far from you. If you need liquid chlorine 12.5% give County Line hardware a call. I was able to buy some from them last week when they received their pallet.

The color is lightening, and the pump basket isn't as dark when I pump only from the main drain. In the right light, I can see things floating in there, and scooping the bottom with the leaf rake is yielding less and less. I started brushing the bottom alternating days with the leaf rake, as it's gotten too chilly to vacuum. I can clearly see the top step and make out the shape of the second step.

Sounds like things are moving along. Are you maintaining your SLAM levels? Sounds like you will be clear when it warms back up.

I know sometimes its hard to find time to go to the bathroom none less the 5 min it takes to test the pool water, but if you're leaving it so long between testing and re-dosing with liquid chlorine, you may be going backwards on your SLAM process.

Try to test the FC only and re-dose as necessary *at least* 3x a day to make headway,.

I'm unfortunately an "essential" employee so I can't treat 3x a day. If I'm lucky I can test in the evening after work or 3x on weekdays or off days.
