Can a Pentair Keypad Assembly Kit 357527Z be used on the 011018 Intelliflo pump?

My pool is green with algae as my Pentair Intelliflo pump (011018) can't be adjusted after succumbing to the poorly designed weatherproofing of its keypad. I had it covered with a portable housing but that cover must have been left off once or twice by my pool service or me. The pump runs but I have no control other than cutting off the power.

I'm handy and tried cleaning up the PCB corrosion and got it to somewhat work but only for a couple minutes at a time. Eventually, I had to be torquing the board in a certain way to get the display and controls to show at all. And now I have nothing but frustration.

Long story short, I'm between jobs and trying hard not to spend $552 for a new drive off Ebay.

Does anyone know if I can replace my broken keypad with the Pentair Keypad Assembly Kit 357527Z? It's available from Sunplay here. Unfortunately, they aren't picking up chat or the phone for me to ask questions.

My pump was built in May 2012.

Looking at the two pics on the listing, the connector for the PCB isn't white like mine and might be a different shape but I can't tell. Alternatively, if the new control board side connector differs might the other end that connects into the seemingly identical keypad use the same RS232 connector such that I could switch out my old cable for the new one and connect to my pump's control board that way?

Please note that I will happily buy a salvage keypad for a 011018 drive if anyone has one they can sell. My keypad part number is 176L0675. And, no, Pentair won't sell me or their resellers this discretely identified part. :-(

The plot thickens. Even Pentair's pool product customer service line at 800.831.7133 couldn't answer the question as to what style connector the keypad uses. :-(

If only they stocked a sample of each of the parts they sold at their support office. Seems like a logical thing to do.

Did I mention that I was on hold for 27 minutes during my first call before getting dropped 5 minutes into the call and prior to the rep fielding my actual question versus sharing his typical answers about needing a new drive but a new pump makes more sense.

The next rep was more helpful during that 42 minute call even as she couldn't get to a definitive answer.

Sigh.
 
You might get lucky and someone here that's actually had both models apart will see this thread and respond, but the likelihood of that happening is slim.

If you do find what works, you'd do us and future users a favor, if you'd come back and post what you find out.

It stands to reason that the communication protocol hasn't changed so your idea of changing out the cable might stand a chance of working, but are you willing to spend $250 to try it?
 
I have rolled the dice and ordered the part from Sunplay. Unfortunately, there website was incorrect and a customer rep emailed that it will be 1-2 weeks before the keypad ships.

I will absolutely report back as to whether this approach works and saves many of us Intelliflo pump users $330 or more versus buying a new drive.

My hope is that I can quickly deduce whether the keypad will work and will simply return it if my assumption is wrong.

But if anybody knows whether this approach will work or not, I will adjust accordingly.

Great news! The Pentair Keypad Assembly Kit 357527Z arrived today from SunPlay. It wasn't "plug-and-play" by any means but the keypad and the female connector work properly with my Intelliflo 011018 pump. That saved me more than $330 versus buying an entire drive off Ebay. And my pond should be a pool within a couple days now that I can turn my pump speed higher. :D

I will do a detailed write up with pics within the next few days.

TL;DR If the keypad/display on your 011018 Intelliflo pump fails due to its poor design allowing water to corrode the board and you are handy, order the Pentair Keypad Assembly Kit 357527Z, further drill 3 holes, caulk over 4 other holes, cut off a small piece of plastic, use your existing cable, and have a new keypad/display in roughly 45 minutes of time. I bought my keypad from SunPlay for $220 delivered.

I have copied some pics below showing some or the parts and challenges I faced along the way.

The full story:

* I did buy the new keypad kit not knowing if the fix would work. No one at SunPlay or Pentair could get their hands on one of these kits to confirm that the keypad connector was identical to the one on my 011018 Intelliflo 3 HP pump. This was maddening, but the alternative of buying an entirely new drive for $552 from Ebay (local pool equipment dealers wanted $1,100) when only the individually part numbered keypad was broken sealed the deal. My research showed the connector to the drive control panel had changed so everything hinged on using the new keypad with my old cable.

* When the new keypad arrived I quickly learned that the keypad still used a RS232 style connector which was a relief. Unfortunately, the right angle connector of my cable was 180 degrees off versus the new design and a plastic fin made it impossible to screw into place. So, seemingly I couldn't quickly test the new part to see if it would work with my pump and my old cable. This was a frustrating as I hoped to confirm it would work without any modification. If not, I would return or resell the part.

* Fortunately, I was able to balance all the control drive and keypad parts in my hands sufficiently to push on the connector just enough to confirm the display lit up and the keypad buttons worked. Eureka!!! NASA, we have liftoff.

* Next, knowing the keypad worked I looked to dislodge it from the keypad assembly housing as it was clear the screw holes of the new assembly would keep me from adding the rotatable nature of the new keypads onto my old pump. Simply stated, the drive mounts to my pump using the 3 long screws close to the keypad itself.

* Well, you can't access the keypad from the backside of the keypad kit drive top. It's solid on the backside. Checking the top I quickly confirmed that the rubber flange is now glued/taped in place presumably to keep water out which is where the old design failed.

* So, I can quickly decided I was using the new keypad assembly in its entirety. I got out my Dremel and used a cutting blade to remove the plastic fin that was in the way of properly securing my 90 degree connector. That was easy enough and my old cable was secured to the new assembly.

* Next, I removed the new assembly's 3 short screws by the keypad and drilled the holes further and through the backside of the assembly. This allowed securing the top to the drive and through to the pump itself. That went easily.


* Unfortunately, the new assembly's 4 corner screws don't line up with the 011018 drive holes.


* Time to drill 4 new ones. This was a little tricky. I basically took the old drive top and lined it up over the new assembly top and drilled holes straight down. I didn't do a perfect job, but it was good enough that I could take the old bolts and mount this new top. I then filled the existing new assembly holes with caulk to keep the rain out.

* With everything connected, mounted, and tightened my pump was back in action and I could increase the pump speed and duration. Eight days and too much effort later the pond is gone and my pool is back.

* Please let me know if this post has allowed you to save $500 or more by replacing your keypad in this same fashion. I enjoy helping others get more for less.
* And let me know if you have questions and I will try to answer them.

* Now, I can get back to solving my suction side leak challenge! An expert comes on Tuesday if I don't solve it myself sooner. And believe me, I have tried...

I went to program my pump as opposed to just changing speeds. And it appears that the "Select" button on my new keypad doesn't work properly with my older 2009 Intelliflo pump. Pressing "Select" generates a "Key Error, Key not in use" message when it seemingly should choose the highlighted menu option.

So this rabbit only jumped halfway out of the hole.

I'm going to keep banging away but I fear some incompatibility going on and didn't want anyone to spend money on what may be only a partial fix.

If anyone has a used keypad from 011018 or similar Intelliflo pump I would happily buy it or trade for what I have currently. Please reply or private message.

I will report more as I learn it.

Unfortunately, I have not gotten the Select button to work, so I'm not able to program the pump but I am able to run it and change speeds.

Please keep me posted on how you solve for your (our) challenge.

Got the same water issue getting inside the display. Pump is working but only on the last programmed speed.
Any update on how to fix this issue without having to spend about $600 on a new 353251 drive?
 
I had the exact issue with my 011018 keypad. I wanted to update this thread with my experience. I don't know if there are various versions of the 011018, so maybe the OP needed to do what he did, but in my experience, I did not have to go through any of that trouble to use the 357527Z. There is a slight possibility that the OP did more work than necessary. Again, I'm not 100% sure if that's the case since there may be various versions of the 011018. But I think what the OP did was tried to use the entire top assembly with the almond case housing and the keypad. I think that is why he went through the trouble he went with the cutting and stuff. All you may need to do is remove the keypad from the almond housing of the 357527Z. Simply unscrew the connector cable. On the defective side, unscrew and remove the cover plate and gently pry out the keypad. Start by pulling on the black borders that is sealed by adhesive, then lift it up, the keypad will come right off. Connect the new keypad from the 357527Z. In this video, this guy went through the trouble of taking off the entire top assembly, and in hindsight, he realizes all he needed to do was remove the keypad. So I learned from his mistake.

As for the SELECT button not working. All you have to do is remember where the old select button was. You see, everything is identical except for the locations of the SELECT, ENTER, ESCAPE, on the 357527Z pad, it is now labeled BACK, SELECT, SAVE respectively. So all you have to do is remember the old label. So for this new pad, you need to use "BACK" as the SELECT button, "SELECT" as the ENTER, and "SAVE" as the ESCAPE. You will have full control of your pump!

Even on the old keypad, I used to get the key not in use error code, because I used to confuse Select and Enter. When the pentair manual says select, they mean select. When they designed this keypad, those are poor choices for words. I think that is why they changed it on the 357527z. So when I installed the 357527z, I was getting the error code, and I thought for a moment that maybe the OP in this thread is right, it's not compatible. Then I realized what a minute, I'm probably just confusing Select and Enter again, which is exactly what happened. It's a little bit of mental gymnastics. Not only do you have to remember the distinction between Select and Enter, you now have to remember their old locations and ignore the new Back, Select, Save labels. So you might want to use stickers to relabel the new keypad. In the video link above where the guy teaches you how to troubleshoot it, watch how he puts clear plastic over the keypad before putting everything back. It is a great idea because I placed Stickers over the BACK, SELECT and SAVE labels, and relabeled it the old way. The plastic covering will help the stickers from coming off.

Moctodtfp. Thankyou for the info. I just installed one exactly as you said. And it worked. Im from PR. problem solved. I just changed the key pad and used the old cable.
