Solar Sun Rings or Blanket?

I have a 24' round pool and recently purchased a 106k btu Rheem heater. I'm looking for something to try to retain some of the heat overnight. I'm thinking about getting a regular solar blanket cover, but since i have to keep the pvc fencing around the pool, it think it's going to be difficult to put on and remove every day - and I'm wondering if it will get sucked into the filter housing if I run the filter while it is on. Has anyone tried the solar rings and had any success? The heater will take care of heating the pool for the most part, I'm just trying to retain that heat on chilly nights (and being in the Chicagoland area means crazy swings in weather, especially this year!). Any suggestions?
 
You do need to cover the pool to retain the heat you add.

Not sure what PVC fencing around the pool has to do with a solar cover? Maybe a picture?

I imagine the rings will work if they cover 90% plus of the surface area. Be sure the wind cannot blow them out of the pool.
 
It's just typical pool fencing, but the pool is buried by about a foot, and the ground around it hasn't been backfilled (building a deck if it ever stops raining here). Because if this, its difficult reaching into the pool on the back end...so I really have to get in to access the far end of the pool. Not a huge issue, but wondering if a few solar rings might help...I read mixed reviews on them.

The more surface area you can cover the better. The Rings obviously leave gaps which will allow evaporation and water cooling. And as you've probably seen in many reviews wind can often push them and stack them over on one side of the pool
 
OK -- have never seen that type of fencing.

It would make using a solar cover difficult.
 
I have the same issue, 28' round with the fencing around 3/4 of the pool. I use a solar cover and 90% of the time just push it to one side and strap it with bungee cords. Not ideal but it works. I also usually cut the cover into 3 sections for ease of removing them.

Updating on this thread - I purchased a 15' round solar cover and it does the trick of retaining a lot of heat and it has kept the pool very warm. We haven't used the heater at all this week (although it's been hot and muggy since we purchased it). I haven't had a problem with it as far as the skimmer - the return pushes it away when it floats near the skimmer. It doesn't cover the entire surface area of the pool (24' round), but it does a good job of covering a good portion of it and is easy to roll up and either stash along the inner fencing, or take out over the ladder. Any larger and I know it would be a struggle to get it out of the pool. Thank you to everyone for your thoughts on this!
 
Oh, I wish I'd seen this earlier - glad the 15' is working for you! We have a 28' round with the safety fencing and cut our solar blanket in to 4 wedge shaped pieces so we could pull it though the ladder. That said, we're being super lazy this year and not really using it - taking the heater hit ($$) instead. :giggle:
