New to pools, pool guy seems to have done nothing for us

Also whoever came up with the solution to buy the pack of 100 hairnets on Amazon and use these as skimmer socks is a genius. I kept probably a hundred thousand or more bugs out of my filter last night from this and they are cheap!

I have been a member going on 8 years, and had not tried the hairnet in the skimmer until this year. It is a game changer over use of the expensive skimmer socks, work just as well, and easier to put on and pull out when full. That's one of the many reasons why:

I ordered as many bottles of chlorine as I could . . . . . My plan is to get at least 12-14 bottles right now and more when I run low.
Good to have extra but you may want to consider how much to buy at one time. Realize, chlorine degrades faster in heat and sun. So make sure you store them somewhere out of the sun. If the temps outside are getting hot in your area (not in mine grrrr) then store it inside.
That would limit how much you buy and store at any given time. :)

You got it sir! PoolMath says 3.5 jugs for 12ppm, should I go for 4?
Something to consider:
When you start the SLAM, (shock level and maintain) it's very important to keep the FC at or above shock level at all times for the SLAM to be the most effective. Every hour test and get the FC up until levels stop dropping quickly, then you can test and add FC less frequently. If FC stays below SLAM levels for any period of time, it slows the process.

So with all that said, unless you're at home babysitting that pool, you can't keep FC levels at SLAM constantly. Therefore, it's not a bad idea to bring your FC several numbers higher than the SLAM levels if you can't keep testing frequently throughout the day.

Thank you! So I guess I'll be adding chlorine in the morning then. The bottles will be stored in the garage (no windows) and right now for the next week or so it won't be very warm at all up here. Yesterday the high was less than 60.

Great!
AND adding chlorine right when you return home from work, AND after dinner, AND before bed, for the next several days.

AND in your sleep. :laughblue: (just kidding)

It is not recommended to raise your FC above SLAM level by any appreciable amount. The excess FC will burn off due to UV quite rapidly and there is the chance of damaging the vinyl liner.

As long as the FC is above minimum, it is killing algae, albeit not as quickly as if it is at SLAM level.

I'll have to remember that. Thanks for the update/correction.

I usually get up a bit before 5am to get ready to leave and leave around 5:30, and then I'm home by 5:30pm. Should I be adding chlorine in the morning and night then? Just want to make sure I'm doing this right!

That is the minimum. It will take a lot longer to complete the SLAM, but it is what it is.

No one at the house to dump in some chlorine mid-day?

When you can add chlorine:
-Morning before you leave.
-When you get home AFTER you change out of your "good" clothes
-after dinner
-before you go to bed

IF anyone can pour in the middle of the day would be great as well.

We live pretty rural and both work during the day. She gets home around 3:30 so maybe I could have her dump some in. I'll have to teach her to use the kit and I can do the pool math on my phone and text her the required amounts I guess! But that means teaching her how to remove and replace the cartridge too lol

The more frequently you can test and add, the faster the SLAM will go. People "get" the SL (shock level)
part of SLAM, but the key to this is the AM part of the word. AND MAINTAIN that chlorine level. It's not easy to do when you are both working, but every chance you can test and/or add gets you closer to the finish line. You're doing great and what you learn will make you a very happy pool owner!

Electrician came today to install some new wiring and outlets on the 2nd floor to get rid of the old knob and tube (my retired dad came over to the house to be there while they did their work). Stupid me forgot that pumps run on electric so the water stopped circulating around 9am until they're all done. Hopefully we didn't lose too much ground.
