Liquid Chlorine

So I have made the switch to liquid chlorine from tabs and have been monitoring the daily fluctuations in FC using the TF100 with speedstir each day. My CYA is at 60 so I try to keep it at 8 each day. I have noticed it drops to 3 or so each day. My pool store nearby sells 2.5 gallons for 5.70 each. Putting in 70 ounces does the trick to bring me to balance. This would last me 5-7 days depending. I don’t feel like running to the store each week. Could I buy two at a time and store in my laundry room in the house which is away from direct sunlight and the chlorine last? I just feel like this is a lot of work plus chemical unless I’m wrong and this is normal? I don’t mind testing each day until I get the pattern down and then maybe I could put a little more to last me a few days or two days before testing agian but I don’t see any other way of gettting out of testing each day and having to apply liquid.

A 5 ppm FC loss per day is too high.
Do you test any CC's?

I suggest you do an Overnight Chlorine Loss Test one night soon.

And yes, you can get a couple of the 2.5 gallon containers at a time. Stored at room temperature it will be just fine if used in 30-45 days.

No I don’t I tested that two days ago and ever since I have lost 3-5. I just tested an hour ago with no sunlight and got an 8. I will test Tommorrow morning before sunlight. I do have a tab feeder but unsure how to turn off. I don’t have anything in it at the moment.

As long as there is nothing in the tab feeder your OCLT should be OK. I would suggest turning off the Ozone too, that device consumes chlorine also.

I get 4 2.5 jugs. They last me 12 days. I pour 1/3 of a jug in a day. Shhhhhhhhh I don't test every day. I came up with the 1/3 jug after doing a meticulous log for about a month and took the average of FC needed for each day THEN measured to see ABOUT how much of a jug it was. Now it is easy.......pour 1/3 jug each late afternoon (once the sun is off the pool). Run out after I brush my teeth for the night and turn the pump off. One day I will have a timer LOL

So once you get to know your pool you will find what you need to do to keep it looking great!

I checked this morning just now before sunrise and my FC level was the same. So I’ll continue to monitor the suns effect over the next seven days and write down the loss per day. My backyard has no trees or screen and faces the sun all morning and after noon as the sun rises and around 5pm goes behind my roof. With ozinator doing it’s job I would expect to use less chlorine so 1-2 ppm a day loss would be normal than?

2 to 4 ppm loss per day is pretty normal. You're a little on the high side, but not terribly so.
Your ozone unit will actually use a little bit of FC so your loss will be incrementally more than loss to sunlight.

How much is the pool getting used now?

You say that your CYA is 60. How confident are you in that number?

Michael,

I did like Kim and bought 4-2.5 gal jugs. This way I can get in on most of the liquid chlorine sales. I live in Stuart a few hours south on 95 from you. Leslies runs sales of $8.88 for 2 jugs a couple of times per month. Last year it was $7.98. Pinch a Penney also runs half-off frequently. At your chlorine consumption storing 4 jugs should be no problem. I keep mine in a deck box but I do have a shady area inside the full enclosure. Inside storage would be better. My chlorine consumption runs about 2 ppm per day peak but the enclosure probably helps that a lot even though I run on the low side of CYA range in the past as I liked to run tablets when I am gone. Now that I have SWG that's not a worry. Do you have a lot of leaves or other organic sources falling into the pool? That could explain the FC consumption.

I hope this helps.

Chris
