algaecide made water cloudy and created foam

Wow, that is sneaky! I saw the dimethyl part and thought this was the good stuff. I will know better next year!

algaecide made water cloudy and created foam

I am closing my pool today. After lowering the water a few inches below the skimmers, I added a quart of HTH Super Algae Guard 60 (polyquat 60) and let it circulate a few hours. The water is now cloudy enough that I can't see the remaining leaves on the bottom (I'm fairly sure there are a few...

    Nitrates

I'm about to order a new test kit. On the Taylor website, it says the FAS/DPD test can measure chlorine up to 20, while the PoolMath chart says I need to bring mine to 31 to SLAM it. The TF website doesn't mention this limitation. But aren't they both selling the same test using the same...

    Nitrates

I am catching on to all this. Thanks for the helpful advice. I found 10% liquid chlorine at a great price (store going out of business), and will brush the pool and pump out water to lower CYA tomorrow. I've never had this problem before, and I'm wondering how much liquid chlorine I should buy...

    Nitrates

The water looks OK except for a bit of algae in some spots.

    Nitrates

Where can I buy liquid chlorine (Home Depot and Walmart don't have it in my area), and how do I know how much to use? It seems that the advice here is the same as one of the options mentioned by Leslie's -- add lots of chlorine -- except that it's a different form of chlorine.

    Nitrates

High CYA seems odd because I haven't added any in a while, and often need to add some. - - - Updated - - - I could add chlorine manually, but it seems like I shouldn't need to do that. That's what I bought the salt system for.

    Nitrates

I recently had the cell replaced under warranty. Of course I have my own test results -- except for nitrates, which I don't have a test for. I just re-tested and found .5 free chlorine, 1 total chlorine, pH off the charts high (had to add two quarts of muriatic acid), total alkalinity at 120...

    Nitrates

I've had my saltwater chlorine generator set on maximum, but zero chlorine in the water. Leslie's tested my water and found nitrates, at a level of 50 (presumably parts per million). The Leslie's manager said there are only two solutions: add large amounts of chlorine, maybe as much as 200...

Should I give up on salt?

What is your salt level? When I bought the salt system, the promotional material said it would display the salt level, but my system does not.

Should I give up on salt?

I switched to a CircuPool salt-water chlorine generator three years ago. When it was very new, the electronic portion failed and was replaced for free under warranty. Now the cell (the part with the metal plates) needs to be replaced; under the limited warranty, it would cost me $213 to replace...

using 4-HP spa pump for pool temporarily

My 1.5 HP pump motor died and I ordered a new (variable speed) one, which won't arrive until Tuesday. I have a spare 4 HP motor from a hot tub. If I can connect that motor to the wet end of my old pump and use it for the next few days, will it do any harm? I assume the water would move through...

getting sand in pool, but laterals are fine

Good questions. I have had Zeobrite in the filter for a few years and never had this problem before. The filter tank seemed to be less than 2/3 full. I can see that the Zeobrite particles are bigger than the openings in the laterals. I have not noticed what position the valve is in when the...

getting sand in pool, but laterals are fine

Sand is coming into my pool through the returns, so I opened up the filter and removed the sand. The laterals and vertical standpipe are fine; no damage at all. I also opened up the multiport valve and didn't see anything wrong with it either. Now what? Does anyone have an idea what else could...
