Guys, I'm quite curious as to what the difference is in flow through the sand filter on backwash vs rinse. They both send water through the drain and not back into the body of water, right? So really what does the "rinse" cycle even do?

That would not work, because you still lack the second hot conductor. You'd need to have a double pole circuit breaker feeding your pump. I'd seek a professional electrician to properly feed this motor.

Bama is correct, the 115v wiring you have uses 1 ungrounded (hot) conductor, 1 grounded (neutral) conductor, and 1 grounding (ground) conductor. Where as 220v is supplied by using 2 ungrounded conductors. When replacing a motor for a pump it is wise to get a match that is as close as possible...

Although I'm not really a leak finding expert. I'd suggest double (or triple) checking the drain cap for leaks. Also the air release, pressure gauge and the likes. A steady stream of water could very well be a hairline crack, but I've never experienced one first hand so I can't say for sure...
