I have a few friends with pools and they have a heat pump and they love it. Most though recommend a heat pump AND a heater so that you can save money during the summer with the heat pump but also heat the pool with gas at the front end and back end of the season.

I wonder how resistant the concrete guys would be to letting me put a big coil of piping down before they do the pour?

That's an interesting thought. The back yard/pool area will be south facing so the concrete would potentially be fairly warm. We could pretty easily run loops of pipe in the concrete and passively heat the pool that way.
