What do you use to protect your pool plastic top rails?

In the past, we just power washed the top rails and caps each spring. Even with that, they had gotten pretty bad looking over 16 years. This year, since the rails and caps were off for liner replacement, we power washed, used comet to remove the stains, let dry, then coated with a good...

    30 yr old Doughboy

My old doughboy liner lasted 16 years. I'm pretty well convinced that doughboy liners are better than generic replacements. At least I tell myself that after spending 50% more on the doughboy, lol. I just replaced an overlap style doughboy liner with a beaded liner. The price for the liner and...

Only Doughboy liners for Doughboy pools?

No, waiting on a sunny day over 70 degrees. And considering the hefty weight of the Doughboy liner, I need a helper with a strong back to help get the new liner in the pool. Have to wait until isolation is over. My pool bottom is flat, so no stretching to worry about.

Only Doughboy liners for Doughboy pools?

Follow up: I ended up buying a doughboy liner. I bought a beaded liner and adapter clips. The local doughboy dealer assured me that installing the beaded liner would be a lot easier than the overlap liner, and it ended up being a bit cheaper than the overlap liner. Even though the final cost...

Only Doughboy liners for Doughboy pools?

I'm trying to buy a liner for my Doughboy pool. I talked to a pool supply store who was happy to sell me a replacement liner until they found out it was a Doughboy pool. They changed their tune telling me that you *must* use Doughboy liners in a Doughboy pool. They couldn't tell me why, just...

What pump shaft seal do I need?

Thanks @SwampWoman Inyo figured it out. The answer? I'm an idiot. Well, Inyo was nice enough to not say that, but that what it comes down to. The inner metal sleeve of the old seal had stuck on the impeller shaft. The new seal I have is the correct seal.

What pump shaft seal do I need?

I have a Hayward 1.5 HP pump that was installed in 2002. On the body of the pump, there is a sticker that has the part number sp1580x15? (the '?" is not completely legible, but I think it is "c"). According to Hayward, that makes it a Power-Flo LX. Externally, it does look like like the pump...

    Pump Life Expectancy

My above ground pool is 12 years old, so I have some experience here. As others have said, the wet side is very durable. The impeller and pump housing will last forever, so long as the strainers are removing the big chunks of debris, and you don't let it freeze with water in it. The seal on the...

Just found out about TFP, here to give pool gurus a good challenge.

The portion of my upright tube that sticks up into the multi valve disintegrated. It looks like there was some sort of chemical reaction between the pipe plastic and the valve plastic. I cut it off a few inches above the sand level and used a 1.5" PVC coupler and a section of 1.5" PVC pipe to...

    Electrical help

The code (at least the version prior to 2008, which I used to have), specifically says that the wires must be separate conductors. - - - Updated - - - How would you get a ground loop inside conduit? Non-conductive conduit wouldn't, well, conduct. Steel conduit would be a faraday cage.

    Electrical help

BTW, I've questioned at least a dozen electricians as to *why* the conductors have to be separate, and why the earth ground has to be insulated. None knew why. One person guessed that it might be due to heat dissipation.

    Electrical help

Per 2008 National Electrical Code for permanent pools (pools capable of more than 42" depth): No pump outlet within 6' of the pool. Pump outlets from 6' to 20' must be twist-lock. Pump wiring must be at least #12 AWG, must be separate conductors (no romex), and the ground wire must be...

Just found out about TFP, here to give pool gurus a good challenge.

I'm just a noob here, but if you have sand coming from the return, then you've got a problem in your filter. That would explain why your filter pressure isn't rising, and why you still have cloudy water. I'd remove the multi valve and see if the stand pipe is broken. You may also have broken...

    Liner stain that defies treatment

If I go the sequestrant route, do I need to take the pH back up and just add more and more sequestrant, or do I need to raise the pH, add sequestrant, then lower pH for each cycle?

    Liner stain that defies treatment

So I need to repeat the whole cycle? In other words, I need to reduce the chlorine to zero, add ascorbic acid, bring ph up, and add Metal Magic? This could get expensive if I have to do too many cycles. Would it be better if I just added ascorbic acid, wait for the stain to disappear, drain 1/3...
