Pool built in 2008 - Hayward. 2014 - 1st replacement motor on pump. 2018 pump motor went out - replaced motor and seal invoice says the brand was Jandy. March 2020 pump quick running - had it replaced Invioce says Regal. October it was leaking, they said mechanical seal failed and replace that ( of course out of warranty) August 2021 - again came out and replaced pump and seal. Friday I go in the backyard and notice the pool is not on. I check and when I hit the switch the motor hums, but nothing, so I put in on service mode and left a message at the pool company. It does not seem like these motors should be failing so often. I am wondering if there is a different problem, are they using inferior pumps? seals?

So that black rounded thing on top might house it? Is that something they would replace when they install a new pump? Is there anything to keep this from tripping if I get it replaced? How long do they typically last? Is this something I can suggest to the repair people I have been using who seem to just want to replace, or do I need to convince dear Hubby to do it? One of the links has a list of questions including what is the temperature of the housing? Black pump housing, Texas Sun - means it likely gets pretty hot. Does get some shade because we have a fence around it - would providing shade improve the life of a capacitor?

Yes.
It would come new with a new pump.
It does not trip. It either works or it needs to be replaced.
A few years to many years.
If Dear Hubby is comfortable working with basic electrical stuff he should be able to replace the capacitor.

I have been using the people who built our pool for these type of repairs--- but since they said they never replace just the capacitor, I checked with the local pool store - that said sure we can do that, but you realize your pump in still under warranty and whoever put it in last August should replace the whole thing.... so I went back to the pool company - who "checked" on it and sure enough, it's under warranty. Which made be look at some of the other times they had claimed " out of warranty". So next Tuesday - 13 days after my first call to them, they are coming out to replace it. After they replace this pump, I will be looking for another "go to" place when I need repairs. If it hadn't been for this group mentioning the capacitor, I probably would have gotten stuck for the cost of yet another motor.
