Tf-100 / Taylor test interchangeability?

I read that the reagents are identical.. are they 100%?

If I already have an old Taylor kit (2006), and I buy a new TF-100 (or just the TF-100 refills), could I use the TF-100 reagents with the Taylor tubes and comparators I still have from my old kit?

And if so, would I do that following the Taylor instructions or the TF-100 instructions? Or are the instructions identical if it's the same reagents?

I am asking because a friend has given me his old 2006 kit, and I was thinking of buying a new TF-100.. and I figure that if everything is interchangeable then I can use the old Taylor tubes and the new TF tubes together etc.... so I have multiples for the various tests and don't need to rinse vials every time...

Perhaps the question/answer is obvious sorry.... figured there may be differences in the chemicals used with the hardware interfering with the tests perhaps?

Do know that the K-1766 reagents are very stable if properly stored and it will give you many, many years of use.

I was of the understanding that the 1766's reagents had the usual 1-2yr expiry date.. Does this mean that, as long as you store the 1766 properly (indoors, stable temp, etc), you can ignore the expiry date and keep using it for "years"? I am asking because in Canada the 1766 kit is indeed very expensive, and I was tempted to buy a salinity/TDS meter instead purely for cost.... but if the 1766 lasts several years beyond expiration then I would no doubt go that route...

My kit is 5 years old and still gives reliable results. The titrating reagent is silver nitrate which is heat & light sensitive. As long as it is stored in a cool, dry and dark place, it can last for years.

The only reagent I know of off the top of my head that's different is the pH one. It's different due to the different volumes used. The K-2006 uses a 45 mL sample I think for the pH comparitor that comes with that kit. The TF-100 uses a Taylor K-1000 for pH testing, and the pH comparitor for the K-1000 has a different volume so the reagent concentration is different.

As @mknauss said, TFTeskKits stills K-2006 refills, no need to buy a TF-100 test kit if you already have a K-2006. The only thing I really added to my K-2006 was the CYA test, as the TFTestkits version goes down to 20 ppm, and the Taylor bottoms out at 30. Same reagent though. Only did that cause I run my spa around 30 ppm and wanted to be able to get measurements below that. For a pool that's not really needed since recommended levels of CYA are higher.

Oh, and not TFTestkits specific but I added the SpeedStir and the SampleSizer.

This is so helpful, thank you, Matt. Makes the kit way more cost-effective. I am sure I wouldnt test salinity that often, so knowing it still works okay, even if it lost some potency, after several years, is great!

You can trust the reagents you get from TFTestKits! They are great customers of Taylor and order regularly, so their reagents are fresh. You do need to make sure you use the pH indicator R-0004 for the larger volume sample size in Taylor's professional kit comparators and the R-0014 reagent for the smaller pH comparators.
