my little pool over our hot summer has begun to develop algae, espially on the vinyl seams and the pool is clouding just slightly. i have doubled my chlorine tabs in teh float and opened it all the way up. just shocked it today with about a 1/2 lb of shock. i have the sand filter. i have added DE in the past and plan to do so. wondering how much DE to add? maybe half cup? TIA

Lets start off with your water chemistry, specifically your FC/CYA ratio. Do you have a recent set of numbers, ideally from your own test kit?
The filter can filter out dead algae, but first you have to kill it with chlorine.

Sorry, I'm not quite sure what that means. If you click on the FC/CYA ratio in my signature, you can see what I'm talking about. For example, if your CYA level is 40, your FC should be between 5 and 7.
What I suspect is that your FC is too low for your CYA, especially since you are using tabs and shock which contain CYA and can cause your CYA to rise over time.
hi thx for your help. i just checked, my FC is 3 and cya is 30. fyi, since is so hot here, when we not using during the summer, we run a shade screen over and above the pool to keep it from getting too hot. our pool temp over this summer was 90-92.

It’s likely @ some point fc fell too low as skirting the minimum is a risky game.

i am in phx too, CYA of 30 is way too low for this weather
I ran 30 at the beginning of summer ( before i have correct test kit, using LC only)
Pool is much better, feels better to the skin, with CYA of 50-60 and loose quite a bit less FC daily
What about your TA, CH, PH?
I used tabs for 2 weeks while on vacation and my TA went from 80 to 60, PH stayed the same at 7.4

my ph and alk run a little low. maybe i should have been putting 3 tabs or a second float. i suspend it in the center of the pool via fishing line corner to corner.
they run low because tabs are acidic. stop using them unless you want to drain every year or two

we been using it for 7 years. had to drain twice i think. how often would i add liquid chlorine? i did like the idea that the tabs provided the cya. does the liquid do so?
depends on the month and your CYA level. There is no CYA in LC
For me, 20k pool with CYA of 50, I have to add 64OZ of 10 percent every night during june/july/august. If i miss a night it's no big deal.
In the winter I add maybe 1-1.5 gallons every 7-10 days.
Save the tabs for vacation, or when your CYA drops to 20-30.
