Does Calcium Chloride Register as Salt with Taylor K-1766?

I added 14lbs of calcium chloride today, to bring my CH up to 350. I haven’t added any salt, and have only used about 2.5 gallons of liquid chlorine so far.

My fill water tested below 200ppm of salt

But after adding the calcium chloride, I ran another k-1766 test, and it shows 600ppm now. So I’m assuming the Cl in the CaCl is registering on the Taylor test.

if that’s true, then when I add salt and enable my IC40 at the end of this month, after my plaster has finished curing, do I target my salt based on the reading of the Taylor test, or do I subtract the 500/600 amount I’m getting from the CaCl I just added?

It does not. If you are showing an increased salinity, that is from what you have added or via fill water.

Anything with chloride will register on the Taylor test.

Calcium chloride, hydrogen chloride (aka acid), sodium chloride etc.

Anything with chlorine will register on the test once the chlorine turns into chloride.

Yes, subtract whatever reading you get from the K-1766 from the 3600 ppm target of the IC40 to calculate how much salt the add. Then add around 75% of the calculated amount, let it dissolve for a few days, and test the salinity. Add more slowly to sneak up to the desired PPM.

OK -- so not really significant when considering the level of salinity needed for a SWCG.

10 lbs of calcium chloride will increase salt by about the same amount as 8 lbs of sodium chloride salt. Most people don't add enough calcium chloride to significantly affect the salinity.

I’ve added liquid chlorine, Muriatic acid, calcium chloride (26lbs total), 20ppm CYA, and also have been using some Trichlor pucks until my CYA hits 60.

so it sounds like my 600 reading is probably a result from the above, considering my fill water has a very nominal amount.

But I suppose the import thing is that I should still use the k-1766 test results to target the salinity. Does this mean the IC40 can use any Cl, not just NaCl?

Yes, any chloride will work. Some places in Australia push magnesium chloride for some reason.

Taylor CH, Salt tests and Magnesium Chloride

Potassium chloride will also work.

In any case, stick with sodium chloride.

Interesting comment on magnesium chloride. Would magnesium chloride have the same affect on soft, porous stone, that sodium chloride sometimes does? ie: the crystallization which happens during evaporation?
