discovery #2 of the day.....
Turns out that there is a hole.....about 1 ft further in than what we dug out....and in the shallow end

From what I gathered, as long as the holes are just in the bottom and the rest of the shell is ok, it should be fixable, correct?

Yes. Should be repairable as long as there’s no significant structural damage. Large cracks near the wall/floor transition OR cracks along slope of the transition from the deep end to the shallow end would suggest possible loss of subterranean base material (wash out, etc). You’re going to have to clear it all out and then get a few reputable pool builders to look at it. If you have a structural engineer locally to you and they’re willing to look at a pool, then you could pay them for an analysis of the structure and the ground underneath.

I can't believe they buried that pool....I mean, if it's too much to handle (and I totally get it that when you get older it gets harder to deal with "stuff") then just sell the stinkin' house a move on....

From what the neighbors told us, I believe the man ended up in a nursing home or assisted living facility or something like that just a few months later. So, it almost didn't happen, but then it's possible this house wouldn't have been on the market when we were looking...so.... 
That house is next to my next door neighbor (who has lived here quite some time). According to him, that large patio with the basketball net, used to be in ingound pool. Apparently the old owners nephew or some other family member almost drowned in it. The owner decided that since they never really used it, he would fill it in. According to my neighbor, he did it himself over the course of a few years - by buying bags of sand at the garden store everyday on his way home from work. Not sure i believe that, but that is the story I was told. (The house also used to be rectangular, the addition that makes it an L was added 5 years go or so by the current owner)
Neighbor just came over and talked to us. First time we heard this, but he said the man was getting nervous that one of his grandkids was going to drown and that also contributed to filling it in
Also....seemingly good news. They did not carry the hole down the transition to the deep end.

Fences and swimming lessons are good ways to keep kids from drowning...
It's looking better and better with each picture. You might have yourself a very good salvage story!! There's likely going to be a lot of hard work to fix the plumbing and possible redo skimmers and returns, but if the shell is structurally sound, you've cut out a huge cost in the building of an in-ground gunite pool.

Good luck Michmela, we are all rooting for you. This being a pool forum, I'm sure we are all shaking our heads that anyone would fill in a pool. After all the expense and anticipation it seem so sad to see one this way. I hope you bring it back to sparkling perfection!

It's an inevitable position a lot of us will deal with, eventually. A lot of older folks just won't leave their home as it falls down around them. A pool can be a headache and while the TFP does make things easier, the fact is there is *work* involved and as you age, the "importance" of a pool probably makes it was to bottom of the list. All the Crud thrown in the pool makes me think that this was done by the lowest bidder or someone who just didn't care about what would happen in the future.
All the stuff in the pool was a 2 birds with one stone for the old man. Not paying for disposal and less fill needed to purchase. Neither one of those would add a lot of savings but to someone on a fixed income, every dollar matters.
it could has also been out of frustration/resentment for having to care for the pool as long as he did. Old people get mighty cranky sometimes. ‘just bury it ALL !!!’ Lol.
What you say is so true, but do you really think any person invoved with filling any pool in ever thought it would see the light of day again?

I always leave criptic notes that relate to current events when deep into a remodel. Sure they may remain forever buried but one never knows.....
