Hey everyone. I just installed new harris 1 hp pump and after running for 10 mins. Shut off from overheating. I'm electrician/plumber so checked amp draw and was 11 amps on each leg when hooked up for 230. Supposed to be around 5 amps. And on 110 it's around 20 amps so just about tripped breaker. Lines don't seem to be blocked skimmer is sucking good and jets blowing out good. Not sure if it's just a defect in New pump, seeing what everyone thought or experienced anything like that. Also wasn't sure if it's to small but pool guy said 3/4 hp would work with this 5000 gal. Pool so I got 1 hp.

We need to understand what equipment you have on your pool. Please create your signature with details of your pool and equipment.
It sounds like you have very little head loss in your plumbing and the pump is running too freely. Even the 1 HP may be too much for your setup.

Seems to not stay right full in pump either after its been shut down it's down about half. Supposed to stay full isn't it?

Pump drianing down when off indicates your plumbing is not perfect and it take sin air and loses pressure when off. Not surprising for your setup.
What pressure does your filter gauge show?

1. Is the motor wired correctly and set up as a 230V motor and not 115V? I see a piece of 12/2 romex coming out of the conduit running in free air. Is that temporary?
2. Did the pump and motor come as a pair? Verify the motor is sized correctly for the pump. They may be mismatched.
3. (Not likely scenario) Do you have the flow curves for the pump? It may be you are pumping against an extremely low head pressure.
4. Bad bearings could cause high current.

Pressure guage stays around 10 psi. Yes pump was a whole unit bought together new. Yes 12/2 romex was the temporary so I could rule out wiring issue. Tried both, on 110 then turned switch to 220 and changed to 220 breaker to check both and drew high amps on both. Ran all good last 2 summers but has to replace pump. So the only thing that has changed was pump, sand filter, plumbing, wiring all still same. That's why I was figuring pump since haven't changed nothing else, but figured check see what you guys thought before return replace pump. Not sure what flow curves are.

Also, one thing you can do is to throttle close the outlet valve from the filter. This will reduce the flow and will reduce the amps. DO NOT close the suction side valves.
Got same brand pump harris but just 1hp instead of 1.5 because pool guy said didn't need that big for this size pool. I'll try the half close the outlet valve see if it makes it not work as much.

10 PSI is pretty low so I don't think that the pump is running near run out. It is more likely an issue with the pump itself. Either interference in the impeller or a problem with the bearings. Since it is new, I would do a warranty claim instead of fiddling around trying to find the problem.
Thanks everyone for the help, I ended just picking up a nice Hayward pump for ALOT more then the Harris and hooked up and running beautiful. Only runny at 6 amps on each leg for 220 and not getting hot. Definitely getting my money back on other pump. Thanks again!
