Hello. My Hayward H400FDN heat exchanger is leaking and (I think) causing a Ignition Failure “IF” fault. I’m prepared to replace with a new part, FDXLHXA1400. My question and request for advice is this, how easy is this swap? I understand the answer is relative to my skills. I’m able to follow directions and believe I can do this. TIA for any feedback and advice. Sincerely, Gavin

Welcome to TFP.

There are YouTube videos about repairing and replacing the heat exchanger to see the difficulty of it.

What makes you think the heat exchanger needs to be replaced? An IF fault is usually caused by other reasons. Leaking water is the sign a heat exchanger needs to be replaced.

I really appreciate the response. Water is leaking from the bottom of the unit, so my assumption it’s the heat exchanger. I’m also assuming that the water is causing the burners to not ignite. I hear them ignite when the fan activates, then after several attempts the IF fault shows. Am I wrong in assuming the 2 issues are related?

You should find and fix the water leak problem and then see about the IF Fault.

A water leak could be the heat exchnager or it could be something else in it. You just have to start taking it apart and see.
