Sizing SWG for 60k gal

I have 60k gal pool. I'm in north NJ, so not a long hot season. I'm thinking of converting to SWG and weighing my options for equipment. Being at 60k and seeing advice to oversize puts me at having to buy 2x40 units. I started paying attention to the lbs/day here, and now wondering if perhaps rj-60plus would be enough since it's rated 3.10. Pentair IC-60 for example is only 2.0. So if I were to go Pentair and get two IC-40 at 1.4 each, that would only give me 2.8, which is still lower than the single rj-60.

Alternatively I can maybe get two edge-40, which would give me total 3.4lb, or two rj-45 which would total 4lb.

I typically run my pool filter for 8hrs, and based on SWGCalculator it says 3.1lbs at 100% for ~8hrs would give me 2ppm FC. Not sure how true to life that is, or how much FC i typically use. My pool doesn't get used all that much, isn't in the sun all day, and pretty deep so stays mostly cool.

Thoughts? Do i need to get 2 units or would rj-60 be fine for my case?

You can probably get by with a RJ-60 or IC-60 in NJ running it close to 100% with the pump running 24/7. Keep your CYA around 70.

I have a single speed pump, so I'd like to run it least as possible, ~8hrs. Also not sure why you say either Rj-60 or IC-60 when their ratings are so far apart. 3.1 vs 2 lbs/day. Is the rating not an accurate comparison between brands?

If you get a SWG you are going to need to run your pump at whatever it needs. I am skeptical of some of the specifications without independent verification of manufacturers claims. You have to be willing to give it a try and see what SWG % and pump runtime work for your pool environment.

i have the rj60 plus in Okc running at 60 % 24/7 it does keep up with my 29k pool. i think you would need a double to run 8 hrs and at / www.discountsaltpool.com they have a 10 $ upgrade so rj45 you upgrade to rj60 for 10 bucks . you also have the option of supplementing w/ Liquid chlorine in heavy use / hot weather to boost daily needs if you go with one cell.

It would make more economic sense to replace the pump (or at least motor) with a Variable Speed than to purchase two SWCG's.

Thanks Marty for throwing an extra variable into the mix My pump is only 4 seasons old, so I didn't consider replacing it. But now I'm looking into it.

Your next motor replacement will be a VS anyway. Fed regulation kicks in next year making single speed motors for pool pumps no longer available.

l1ltaral1l, no I didn't build the pool. It's nothing special, just a rectangle with the deep end being like 11' and shallow end 5' iirc. Kind of dumb in my opinion because it's not kid friendly at all. Too much water makes heating hard/expensive, and obviously hitting high end for specs on equipment also costs$. Certainly not something I'd build today.

Back to my original question; I just realized I can try going rj60 and if it struggles I can get a second rj30. I'll loose maybe 150$ vs going two rj-45 right away but at least I'll have a chance to see how it does on its own. There shouldn't be any issue with running 2 different rated cells in parallel right?

Was it built as a residential pool? Or commercial? I agree - that's a LOT of pool!

It was built as a residential. And based on my neighbor's accounts, it was because the owner wanted to one-up that neighbor's 20x40 pool, lol.

Pulled the trigger on the rj-60 + 3hp pump, and if it struggles I'll add an extra rj-30. There was a discount on the package so in the end don't think i'll loose much over 2x45+pump

Wire the SWCG through your existing timer. You need to be sure the SWCG is not powered whenever your pump is not running.

Was going to look at that next. I thought the pump has a scheduler, so thought it would replace the timer as well. Should I still go through timer either way?

The pump will have a timer/scheduler. But you cannot use it to control the SWCG. So you will need to use the timer for the SWCG making sure it is powered only during the time span you have the pump running.
