New pool liner black water

We did fill the pool with water from the softener.

All at one time? I don't believe your softener has that capacity. It soon depletes and then I believe it simply bypasses and you then are putting plain well water in your pool.

1. I would do nothing until you got your own test kit so you can see and understand what's going on in your pool. Continuing to circulate 24/7 in the "filter" position I believe will continue to improve your pool

2. The pollen is easy enough to vacuum out. I would do it in the filter position and continue to run the pump 24/7. Backwash your filter when the psi gets 25% above normal. What is your current psi?

If you continue to use powdered chlorine or chlorine tabs eventually your CYA levels will be too high and you will start to have algae problems. Did you add any stabilizer/cyanuric acid to the water?

No. I understood the chlorine had stabilizer in it??

its at 20. so I should vacuum in filter position rather than waste? will the pollen clog up the sand in the filter?

that makes sense too....the water softener wouldn't be able to filter all that water...it was running for two and a half days to fill. You have been so helpful. I'm really grateful for your knowledge.
 
When the filter gets dirty you backwash and rinse to clean the sand bed. As for the chlorine and stabilizer, we like to keep the stabilizer between 30-50. You can use stabilized chlorine til the stabilizer hits that range. Most of us use liquid chlorine either from the pool store or 6% plain unscented bleach from the grocery store. Liquid chlorine is not stabilized and will not cause the stabilizer levels to rise. oh, ok, thank you. I will look at the videos. I was told never to use liquid chlorine or bleach because it will bleach out my vinyl very quickly.

Hopefully, it will. That's when your psi will rise. When it gets to 25% above normal. Shut the pump off and set the valve to backwash. Backwash until the sight glass is clear, then shut the pump off again and set the filter to the rinse. Rinse for about a minute. Shut the pump off one more time and set the valve back to filter then turn the pump on and leave it on 24/7 until it's time to repeat that process.

GET YOUR OWN TESTKIT (Only one of the two we recommend) and stay out of the pool store. We can only help you if you give us good test results we can depend on. STAY OUT OF THE POOL STORE!

Any idea of a timeframe I might expect to start seeing some improvement in my water? A week, a couple days? a month? It looks the same tonight as it did yesterday. I have vacuumed pretty much all the pollen out....there might be a little left settling at the bottom. I have the filter running. Just wondered so I can be sure I'm on track doing the right things.
 
If it is iron, it's usually a few days. If you have algae also, then a lot will depend on how soon you order a kit and start doing your own testing.

It's easy to assume we are just trying to sell you a kit but you have already seen what pool store testing and knowledge has done for you. The Taylor K-2006C or the TFTestkits TF-100 are the two kits that will give us the information we want. You cannot get them locally.

While you are waiting for the kit, please use your K-1004 and post current results for pH and Free Chlorine.

Don't add ANYTHING else to your pool. Post up those two tests and we'll go from there.
 
As of 7 a.m. today: PH 7.2. Alk 80. FC 2. CC 0

I am very discouraged. The pool color has not changed at all. I'm reading all kinds of different things about metals. Everyone says something different but I don't see anything changing. I read that if it is metal it will not filter out because it's too small. There are a bunch of chemicals or things to put in the pump filters that claim to remove metals. I am growing more concerned as each day passes that this is ruining our brand new liner but there is no way to tell. Even draining and refilling is not likely going to help if it is actually metals of some kind. I ordered the test kit you recommended as well as another that tests for all kinds of metals but that could take a few more days to get here. I just don't know what to do now. Doing nothing is not helping either. I am so stressed out by this. Another site said I should shock, vacuum, partially drain and refill. But seems shock or chlorine is what started this. This started Sunday and today is Wednesday so if something were going to happen you'd think I'd at least see a little change.
 
I think you need to try another application of sequestrant. I would use Metal Magic. Your pool would take 3 bottles for the initial dose. You can read about it here ProTeam Pool Care and it should be available at any pool store that sells Proteam products, or you can order it online. Once the sequestrant clears the pool you will need to add smaller doses on a regular basis, as chlorine does oxidize the sequestrant and deplete it. If you raise the chlorine level too quickly after useing a sequestrant the dark color will come back.

Thank you. I think I will try that since the "add nothing more and let it filter out" is not working. I've been super stressed about it. So, if this works can I ask why I would need to continue use on a regular basis if it takes the metals out? Wouldn't I only need to use it if I used the well water to add to the pool. I'll see if I can find some locally, and if not will order online. That still gives time for the "do nothing" to start working if it's gonna which I don't think it is.
