Recommended chlorine puck brands

I normally use the bleach baking soda method but given how hard it is going to be to get bleach this summer I’m considering using pucks again.

Can anyone recommend the best brands that are mostly just chlorine and stabilizer without the other junk additives?

If you go to any major pool store and ask them for 3" pucks that are just pure trichlor, they will have buckets filled with them. You might pay a bit of premium over buying from places like Walmart or Costco (not that any normal person can even get within 100 yards of a Costco nowadays with all the toilet-paper hoarding lunatics about), but at least you'll get pure trichlor pucks...

I get a small pail (5# or 10 pucks) from Home Depot or Lowes. Active 99. They have larger buckets of them.

Before going to the puck side, be sure you look for liquid chlorine. From all reports here, there seems to be ample supply of it. Just not household bleach.

Clearly the toilet-paper lunatics have not descended upon your quaint New Jersey town...around here, the lines of hoarders wrap around the two Costco's we have starting at 7am....so much for social-distancing....I still haven't figured out yet how much TP a human needs to feel "safe" but it apparently requires a deep bunker and lots of trips to the ammo shop to protect the stash....

My local Costco has 2 kinds of pucks mixed together. One has algaecide for sure, the other, I’m not sure...?

Check in the pool section of Walmart for their liquid chlorine. Many folks buying "household bleach" don't realize pool liquid chlorine is the same (but stronger usually) so Walmarts been getting that. Also ask your local pool stores if they sell liquid chlorine- you may need to buy a carboy from them but its usually a good deal. Animal Feed Stores, Janitorial Supply Warehouses also often have liquid chlorine.

Gotta get creative these days, huh?

I have found pool chlorine easy to find at Home Depot with no limits. The concern is always that it is stale being stored in the SC heat. Also.. tons of bottles.

I went with trichlor pucks from my local small town pool store “pool season” brand that they carry. As far as I can tell, they are 8 oz trichlor 3” pucks with CYA stabilizer.

I may go back to chlorine but since we get so much rain here in upstate SC, I am always needing to add CYA. Using pucks helps me passively raise it. We had by my estimate 8 inches in the past week. Pool got real low due to abnormally low humidity - and then the free water faucet from the sky opened up! Had to pump some of it off - hate to do that!

As long as you can maintain your FC at the target level for your CYA, you can use trichlor. Frequent testing of CYA is needed.

I like "In The Swim" tabs. They come individually wrapped, not too expensive (since I don't use them except when on vacation) and delivered to your door. I think I bought my current 50lb bucket 3 years ago, and still should have enough for another season or two.

Luckily, my local patio and pool store (more patio than pool) has plenty liquid chlorine shock.

Thank goodness for this thread. I just went to check the label on the pucks that I use and I see no extra additives. My dad also surprised me with another brand of pucks as a gift. I looked at the label and also saw no extra additives.

I have been using Aqua Guard 99 3-inch Chlorinating tabs, also using Pool Essentials Liquid chlorine. I am running low on LC and cant find any so I am off today to buy the Pool Tech shock. see attachments for SDS.
