I just added the salt to our pool today and want to give it about 24-48 hours to mix well with the water before we turn on the SWG Monday for the first time. That being said, currently my CYA is 40 and I am looking to go to 70 as my target. Our PB said he didn't add any because its Winter. Does this make sense? We are still in the 70-80's temperature wise and the water is 74 degrees.

Should I take it to 70 or not?

I've heard this when people are about to close their pool and I think it makes sense in that case because it doesn't do any good if there's a cover on plus it degrades over winter months anyway. But for my pool (S Florida) we run year round. I left the CYA at 40 for a few weeks right after swg conversion earlier this year and I have to say everything seems to be better in the TFP recommended CYA range for swg pools. FC demand is way lower and pH seems seems easier to control. CSI also seems easier to keep between 0 and -.2.

We aren’t planning to swim but we don’t shut the pool down for winter. We keep it going all year round.

Glad to help. If it were me I'd still get the CYA to the recommended level. Just to make chemistry easier. And who knows you might want to take a dip or two? Stabilizer is cheap and pool chemistry to protect finish (csi) plus keep the pool swim ready would be my choice. But I could see the logic in just keeping away from algae problems with lower temps and sunlight, it may not be required till swimming season.

Is your pool screened-in or not? If so, I'd leave CYA at 30-50 year round. If not, higher CYA will likely be helpful, especially in the summer. My screened Florida pool does very well in the CYA 30-50 range and uses minimal chlorine. Screening blocks about 50% of the UV and is a big consideration. For what it's worth, I've also found that maintaining TA at about 50 minimizes PH rise and need for acid doses. Just make sure your CSI is kept slightly negative.
